PGA Golf Betting Picks & Predictions: American Express

In this new weekly article, Awesemo’s golf experts will give their favorite PGA betting picks, odds, and predictions of the week for the 2022 American Express.

Ben Rasa’s Pick: Rickie Fowler

Outright 60-1 | Top 5 10-1 (DraftKings)

Old habits die hard, but this seems like a spot to take a shot on Fowler. A handful of elite players like Jon Rahm will be in the field, but the talent depth is lacking, which opens it up for a lot of mid-range players to get in the mix. Seeing Fowler in the 60-1 outright range is warranted, but his game still has shown flashes, including a third-place finish during the swing season at the CJ Cup in October. In terms of course history, Fowler finished 21st at this event last year and 10th back in 2020, all while losing strokes putting. He will need to flip the putter to tap into the ceiling, but at this price it is worth a shot that he runs hot with the flat stick and gets in contention.

Geoff Ulrich’s Pick: Christiaan Bezuidenhout

Outright 60-1 | Top 5 10-1 (DraftKings)

I will stick in the same range as Ben but go to the guy I was on last week. Bezuidenhout gained 5.8 strokes ball striking last week (his best-ever week on tour in that regard) and finished 17th but was about neutral on and around the greens. Considering putting and scrambling are generally the best part of his game, it is very possible we were just a week early. Last year another young player in Si Woo Kim posted a similar performance to Bezuidenhout at the Sony (25th) and then went to Palm Springs and won. Bezuidenhout has another gear and has found wins on virtually every pro tour where he has competed. The odds remain fine to give it one more go before we look elsewhere next week.

Jason Rouslin’s Pick: Matthew Wolff

Outright 28-1 (DraftKings –They Also Offer Doubles)

It goes without saying, but any event that both Jon Rahm and Patrick Cantlay are teeing it up without the rest of the best in the world, they should be overwhelming favorites. If you are looking to bet them and looking to increase the odds, you can double them up with Collin Morikawa, Viktor Hovland or Rory McIlroy competing over on the DP World Tour’s opening event this week. Odds increase from 5-1 or 9-1 to above 44-1, but you would need both golfers to win their respective event.

If neither of the studs wins this week, Wolff is one of the best-positioned golfers to pick up his second PGA Tour win. After a very difficult sophomore season on the PGA Tour, he has returned to good form, the form we were used to seeing when he first joined the tour a few years ago. His first four starts of the year all ended with finishes better than 18th and one-runner-up. At a course where he should be able to use his length to his advantage, Wolff’s number seems too high for his ceiling.

Max Smotritskiy’s Pick: Taylor Moore

Outright: 90-1 | Top 10: 6.5-1 (Caesars Sportsbook)

This week’s winner is as close to a foregone conclusion as there can be in golf, as Jon Rahm is teeing it up at a course he loves while showing great form to start the year in Hawaii. However, it feels prudent to dip down to some longer odds this week in case the favorites stumble out of the gate. This is one of the easier courses the PGA pros will play, so taking a player used to shootouts on the Korn Ferry Tour is wise. Moore has shown his ball striking is top notch, and when the putter also gets hot, top finishes are firmly in play. His odds are longer than they should be in a shallow field in what project’s to be a birdie fest, and it would not be surprising to see Moore at the top of the leaderboard heading into Sunday.

Eric Lindquist’s Pick: Luke List

Outright: 65-1 | Top 10: 10-1 (DraftKings Sportsbook)

With two massive favorites by golf standards in Jon Rahm (+500) and Patrick Cantlay (+900), there is some definite value to be had by sprinkling in a number of mid-range outrights. And while Matthew Wolff (+2800), Si Woo Kim (+5000) and Rickie Fowler (+6000) all made the card as well, my favorite bet of the entire week is Luke List for even longer odds (+6500). List is coming off a fall season that showed what he’s capable of in weaker field events, posting three top-11 finishes in his final four events. Best of all for List — a notorious world-class ball-striker — is that his short-game showed signs of life towards the tail end of 2021, gaining 5.7 and 1.7 strokes around the green his final two tournaments. If he can bet remotely competent with the flatstick, expect the Vanderbilt graduate to make some noise out in La Quinta this weekend.
