THE MATCH IV: Best Bets and Breakdown | DeChambeau/Rodgers vs. Mickelson/Brady 7/6

It is the July 4th weekend which means plenty of sports to go along with what is sure to be lots of barbeques across the country. We have many games to follow, but don’t think the action stops after the 4th passes. Fast forward just a few days to Tuesday, July 6th, and we have a special event in the golfing world taking place. It’s The Match IV, which pairs up two teams comprised of one PGA tour player and one NFL quarterback. Phil Mickelson and Tom Brady are Team 1 and have the experience of having played in the past edition against Tiger Woods and Peyton Manning. They will be joined by newcomers Bryson DeChambeau and Aaron Rodgers, who both have been making headlines for various reasons heading into this event.

The Match IV: Bryson DeChambeau/Aaron Rodgers  vs. Phil Mickelson/Tom Brady

Tuesday, July 6th at 5:30 PM EST on TNT

Before we dive into the individual bets for this lets get a few things out of the way. This event occurs in Montana at the Moonlight Basin Ranch, and I assume the course isn’t overly difficult. With elevation expect some massive drives and plenty of scenic views that Montana offers. Also worth noting is the format, a match-play style that offers the pros and amateurs chances to contribute. Basically both teams drive the ball and then they decide whose ball they would like to play. From there, it is an alternative shot with match play scoring until a winner is declared after 18 holes. This brings a lot of strategy into play, and it’ll be interesting to see how much the QB’s can help out their pro partners. With all that out of the way, let’s dive into the important stuff, like how to make some money on this made-for-TV event.

The Match IV Best Bet: Bryson DeChambeau/Aaron Rodgers to Win -160 (PointsBet)

Right off the bat we have to get one of the biggest questions out in the open which is how good is Aaron Rodgers at golf? The disgruntled QB is the big unknown as we have seen Brady, and obviously, we know Mickelson and DeChambeau can play. Rodgers has played in Pro-Am events and is regarded as a quality player with a sub-5-shot handicap, according to the USGA. This is lower than Brady and I think its safe to assume the game is in decent enough shape to hold his own here. Then you get that he is paired with Bryson DeChambeau, and the situation is already tilted towards the favorites in my mind.

I don’t mind laying the -160 here as this price will continue to climb, and it’s a simple situation. The driving abilities of DeChambeau could change the entire game for his team and in the thin air expect some truly mind-boggling stats. It’s not to say Mickelson can’t hit bombs of his own, but it’s just not on the same level. In addition, I don’t think experience will factor in much at all, and looking at the pure talent of each team, it’s clear Rodgers/Bryson get the nod.

Even though I think the move here is to bet this Match straight up, there are a few props out there worth considering. Our very own Josh Engleman recommended this on Awesemo.com Breakfast Menu Daily Betting Show, and I don’t mind tailing him here. The bet is Bryson DeChambeau -200 to outdrive Phil Mickelson on Hole 6 which is a 630 yard Par 5.

We cannot know where the Match will stand after 5 holes, but more often than not, I think this is a spot we see DeChambeau show off the firepower and pull driver. If he does, it’s going to be a tough ask for Mickelson to keep up, and this could be a quick win if you are willing to stomach -200. I think the Match itself is a better proposition at -160, but adding a small wager on this type of prop can be another fun way to get exposure to this Tuesday Showdown. Overall it should be fun to see how DeChambeau and Rodgers play together, and I expect them to be the new reigning champ after the Match IV is completed. Good luck and enjoy the event!
