The PGA Tour hosts the Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detroit Golf Club (par 72, 7,370 yards). This track was designed by Donald Ross, and the tournament took the Quicken Loans National’s spot on the PGA calendar three years ago. Bryson DeChambeau (-23) is the defending champion, and Nate Lashley (-25) won the first-ever Rocket Mortgage Classic in 2019. Every week, I use Alex Baker’s Unofficial World Golf Rankings to help identify mispriced options in both the PGA DFS and golf betting market, and below are three expert PGA picks and odds this week for our Rocket Mortgage Classic betting cards.
Expert PGA Picks & Odds: Rocket Mortgage Classic
Much like the standard rankings in golf, Awesemo has come up with the Unofficial World Golf Rankings, so we can use them in PGA DFS lineups or to find an edge on your golf betting picks. At Awesemo, the metric is the number of strokes above or below how an average field in a PGA tournament performed. How to weigh these data points is essential, as people love to talk about short-form versus long-form. Only PGA Tour tournaments are considered right now, and golfers need a minimum of 20 rounds played. Players are not rewarded by more or fewer rounds in the time period.
Bryson DeChambeau (+750, PointsBet)
Betting the favorite is never ideal, but DeChambeau was brilliant here a year ago and is far and away the best talent in attendance this week. In his win at Detroit Golf Club last season, the bomber destroyed this golf course with his length, leading the field in strokes gained off the tee and in driving distance. The big driver helped DeChambeau dominate the four par 5’s at this track, and he ranked second in strokes gained on the par 5’s.
Also, DeChambeau loved these poa and bentgrass putting surfaces, finishing the event first in strokes gained putting. He is going to try to overpower the course again, and a repeat win is very possible considering his current form. In his last 12 rounds, DeChambeau ranks fourth in ball striking, fifth in greens in regulation, first in strokes gained off the tee and second in strokes gained on par 5’s.
Doc Redman (+5000, BetMGM)
Redman has been excellent at Detroit Golf Club, and this is the perfect place for him to pick up the first PGA win of his career. He was the runner-up to Lashley in 2019, and then Redman posted a 21st-place finish at this course the following year. Of all the golfer’s that have competed in both of editions of the Rocket Mortgage Classic, Redman has the best average finish at 11.5, and he comes into this week with two top-10s in his past five starts.
Most notably, Redman was just the runner-up to Garrick Higgo by one shot at the Palmetto Championship. Redman’s irons have been tremendous, ranking seventh in strokes gained on approach in his last 12 rounds, and he is 53 spots higher on Awesemo’s Unofficial World Golf Rankings than his standard ranking.
Ryan Armour (+450 for Top 20, BetRivers)
Armour’s game is coming together just in time for his reunion with Detroit Golf Club. He is 2-for-2 in made cuts at this venue, with a fourth-place finish last season. Including this impressive outing, Armour has three top-10s in six career starts at courses designed by Ross. In addition to his love for these layouts, Armour is currently riding a three-cut make streak, including a 26th-place finish at the Byron Nelson and an eighth-place finish at the Palmetto Championship. He gained at least two strokes tee to green at all three of these events, and Armour also ranks ninth in birdie-or-better percentage over this span. He isn’t getting the respect he deserves this week, and Armour is an outstanding value for a top-20 at this price.
