It’s not often that a team can win the turnover battle, get more offensive rebounds and put up more shots yet lose the game, but that was the case in Game 2. Toronto put up a whopping 14 more shots than Boston, but they made just four more than the Celtics.
In the end, free throws made the difference. While fouls were essentially the same, Boston attempted six more free throws and only missed two, while Toronto missed three. There isn’t much room for error in close, low-scoring games.
For Boston, they have to feel amazing about going up 2-0 in the series because they have not been playing their best basketball. They turned the ball over 17 times last game and 22 times in Game 1. The Celtics are lucky that the Raptors failed to capitalize on these extra possessions. However, if you keep giving them these opportunities, they will eventually convert. Boston needs to be sharper today if they wish to avoid the upset.
This series is evenly matched, and I think Game 3 will come down to extra possessions. If Boston gets out-rebounded and keeps turning the ball over, they will lose. Toronto does not seem capable of beating Boston straight up without these gifts that continue to be served to them on a silver platter. However, can the Celtics really rely on Marcus Smart getting hot from downtown again?
