PGA Odds & Expert Picks: Rocket Mortgage Classic

In this new weekly article, Awesemo’s golf experts will give their favorite PGA betting picks, odds, and predictions of the week for the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Ben Rasa’s Pick: Keegan Bradley

Outright 45-1 (BetMGM)

No, this isn’t a leftover pick from last week’s Traveler’s Championship where a lot of people were on Bradley. That was a pseudo home game for him, and it resulted in a disappointing missed cut despite being plus-3.1 tee to green. Seeing Bradley still striking it well is the main reason I’m willing to buy in now coming off a letdown week. He still has ability off the tee and comes to a course that should allow him to take advantage if he can keep it in the fairway.

Like most weeks, the biggest question is, can Bradley keep up in an environment where one needs to make putts? If he can get an outlier putting performance, everything else checks out. Plus, the price is fantastic with some 45-1’s available on the market. In a field this weak, don’t be afraid to add Bradley to the betting card and hope his putter finally cooperates.

Geoff Ulrich’s Pick: Beau Hossler

Outright +15000 | Top 10 +1200 (BetMGM)

Hossler is coming off two strong starts in a row. He has struggled to find consistent enough ball striking to be a force on the PGA but has shown vast improvement in that area in his last two starts. Hossler gained 5.7 strokes on approach at the Palmetto (finished 19th) and then fired a final-round 64 last week (10th) where he gained 1.7 strokes on approach in just one round.

He has also shown a lot of confidence off the tee of late and carries similar distance to last year’s winner/runner-up combo. Considering his ability on the greens — he ranks 29th in bent/poa splits — and the strength of the field, his odds look enormous. Remember, this is a player who was one lip-out away from winning on the PGA Tour (2018 Houston Open) and was very highly touted coming out of college. Taking the big odds for an outright and top-10 considering his form is a no-brainer in what should be a wide-open birdie fest.

Jason Rouslin’s Pick: Bryson DeChambeau & Rory McIlroy Each Way Parlay

Outright +5000 | Top 5 +530 | Top 10 +220 (BetMGM)

The beauty about having two professional golf tours around the world that sync up and offer high-quality golf is it gives us the ability to bet on both tours. Using BetMGM through a laptop/desktop, simply add all six bets (both DeChambeau and McIlroy to win, finish top five and top 10), click the parlay tab and click each correlating finish. You also can mix and match the finishes as long as the parlay bet has one of DeChambeau one of McIlroy.

Both golfers are the clear favorites in their respected fields, and both are playing well. They may not be at their best, but even their B+ games this week could yield a win. Each is very short to win, but pairing them together makes the odds look rather enticing. Hitting one winner is tough enough, so nailing two obviously increases the difficulty and variance. I like to hedge those both with the expectation that both will have quality finishes, which will still yield +220 if they both end up in the top 10.

Max Smotritskiy’s Pick: J.J. Spaun

Top 20 +1000 | First Round Leader +15000 (BetMGM)

DeChambeau is winning this week, so finding value elsewhere makes sense. Spaun was once a very popular play in DFS circles but has since experienced a downturn in his young career. This tournament has shown that unknown golfers can get to the top of leaderboard by stringing a ton of birdies together, as this course does very little to punish wayward shots. Spaun is showing better form lately, gaining four strokes ball striking last week and making three cuts, with one top-20 in his last five starts. He had a nice go of it last year in this tournament and does better on fast greens and on easy courses. This is a nice spot to jump on the high odds to buy low on a talented golfer.
