Despite the short turnaround from their Game 7, the Rockets rode the momentum into the second round against the Lakers, defeating the one-seed in Game 1. Losing Game 1 has been a pattern for LeBron James in recent playoff trips, but beating him in Game 2 will be a much tougher task for the Rockets. The NBA odds agree with this sentiment, favoring the Lakers by a handful of points.

Houston did not just sneak by the Lakers to win this game. They outscored the No. 1 seed in three of the four quarters, winning the game by 15 points. As the team has gotten healthier, they have developed a deeper rotation as well, playing eight players double-digit minutes, with seven going for over 20 minutes. Leading the game in plus/minus was surprisingly Mr. Hustle, P.J. Tucker.
On paper, this does not look to be a good series for Tucker. At 6-foot-5, how is he supposed to compete with Anthony Davis or Dwight Howard down low? Tucker made it happen, leading the game with a +19 differential. While LeBron was the worst among the Lakers’ starters at -15, Kyle Kuzma proved he is still a liability at -21.
The Lakers got more offensive rebounds and did most of the little things in the game just as good as Houston. Simply, they couldn’t get the ball to fall. They shot 42.2% from the field and just 11-of-38 from long range. To beat Houston, teams have to knock down the 3. Once they do, Houston needs to respect it, which opens up the opportunity to use the size mismatch inside.
This series is interesting since it’s two teams that are built very differently. LeBron at point guard is four inches taller than Tucker at center. This could be a back-and-forth series, but we will see which playing style prevails today.
