Spurs vs. Pelicans Best Bet

The San Antonio Spurs make a one-game stop in New Orleans in a win-or-go-home situation on Wednesday night. The winner of tonight’s matchup will face the Clippers for a final play-in game to determine the No. 8 seed. The Spurs were on a roll towards the end of the season winning seven of eight games before dropping their final three games of the regular season. San Antonio will look to coach Gregg Popovich and his postseason success to guide them to another trip to the playoffs. These two teams have faced off four times this season with San Antonio winning three of the four matchups.

The Spurs snuck into the 10th spot for a chance at the playoffs after an epic collapse by the Los Angeles Lakers, who lost eight of their last 10 games on the season. Dejounte Murray leads the team, averaging 21.1 points, 8.3 rebounds and 9.2 assists per game. Keldon Johnson has been a stud down the stretch for the Spurs, dropping 20-plus points in nine straight games. Lonnie Walker IV (back) is not listed on the injury report. He was sidelined for two of the final three games of the regular season but will suit up in the most important game to date for this Spurs squad. San Antonio is averaging 113.2 points per game on 46.7% shooting while allowing 113 points to opponents. The Spurs played excellent defense over their last 10 games, ranking third in defensive rating during this stretch. San Antonio plays some solid interior defense with Jakob Poeltl leading the frontcourt and they will look to force the Pelicans to take more shots from the perimeter, where New Orleans ranks 27th in the league for 3-point shooting percentage (33.2%).

The Pelicans are fortunate to have found themselves in a spot for the play-in game after a 1-12 start to the regular season. New Orleans made a huge trade at the deadline acquiring C.J. McCollum from the Trail Blazers and it seems to be paying off, with the Pelicans going 8-2 in their last 10 games with McCollum and Brandon Ingram together on the court. McCollum leads New Orleans in scoring with 24.3 points. He dropped 32, 20 and 36 points in three performances against San Antonio as a Pelican in the regular season. Ingram (hamstring) is listed as probable after going through a full practice on Tuesday. Herbert Jones (leg) and Jonas Valanciunas (ankle) are not listed on the injury report despite both players sitting in the final game of the regular season. The Pelicans are averaging 109.3 points per game on 45.7% shoot while allowing 110.3 points to opponents.

New Orleans was one of the top under teams this season, cashing the under in 58.5% of their games overall. San Antonio has a 18-22-1 over/under record on the road this season. The under has cashed in three of their four matchups this season and seven of their last eight meetings. San Antonio slowed their pace of play down, ranking 14th in the league over their last 10 games resulting in them cashing the under in eight of those 10 games. Both offenses rank bottom half of the league in offensive efficiency and bottom five in 3-pointers made per game. Ingram’s hamstring injury is something to monitor as the team could look to McCollum to shoulder more of the offense if Ingram’s injury becomes a hindrance. In four matchups this season, the combined total is averaging 218 points per game with only one of those games exceeding 224 points. Look to the under as tonight’s best bet in the Spurs vs. Pelicans matchup.
