NHL Betting Picks: Wednesday’s Best Bets + Odds

The Appetizer Game

Detroit Red Wings vs. Tampa Bay Lightning, – Detroit features not just a bad penalty kill but maybe a historically disastrous one. Their problems multiplied this season. Thankfully, the Red Wings are only 19th in minors taken. However, their league-worst 64.5% penalty kill goes up against Tampa Bay’s 13th-ranked power play, which is in the top 10 at home, and improving.

Detroit compounds its problems by having the worst special teams percentage in the NHL at just 76.3%. This combines the power play (11.8% — 26th) and that aforementioned penalty kill. It averages just 2 goals per game while yielding 3.5.

Detroit comes in without a road win in the early going, while Tampa Bay has won four straight at home. Tampa Bay will likely focus primarily on the Dylan Larkin line and little else. Honestly, not much scares the Lightning, nor should it.

The Latest Sports Betting Content from Stokastic Odds

Tampa Bay misses Nikita Kucherov a little but not as much. Oddsmakers do not seem to mind, as numbers for the Tampa Bay moneyline have soared above -300. That number has been seen hovering around -310 to -330 throughout the morning.

Currently the puckline for Tampa is around -110 to -130. If that number creeps to -130 or above, the value is just not there. There is even a puckline set to -2 goals for Tampa, meaning they would have to win by 3. That number is set closer to even at around -106 for now. It is higher risk, but look for a little movement there as well as the standard -1.5 puckline.

The Tampa Bay puckline looks to be best value of this early game. The over of 5.5 is at -120 and nearing -125 on a few sites. That may only be an option if it backs off a bit.

The Main Course

Philadelphia Flyers vs. Boston Bruins (Over 5.5) — Again, the over is at -110 at press time, which is surprising. This is why: Any oddsmaker offering 5.5 may be giving away free money. Most sites should have this game at 6, and for good reason.

The Philadelphia Flyers are 7-2-1, but their team defense has slipped a little bit in the early going. Also, they are still without the services of Sean Couturier. That means they will have to score more without their All-Star center. This is a high-risk pick of sorts because of Boston’s overall defensive numbers. They are in the top 10 in goals allowed, shots allowed per game and penalty kill. However, Philadelphia is 29th in shots allowed at nearly 34 per 60.

Philadelphia will be looking for a measure of revenge given that Boston won the last meeting 6-1 just a little less than two weeks ago, and that was without David Pastrnak. Goals could be a bit more plentiful than expected given Boston is a bit banged up defensively, and so are the Flyers.

Take the risk with the over here, as it is expected to stay at 5.5.

Notable Score And Other Props

The Boston puckline could be something to look at if it rises to +120 or above, but it was only around +120 to +125 at press time. Maybe the -1 puckline moves a bit, but the -1 1/2 is sitting around +185 to +205. For some anytime goal-scoring props, Patrice Bergeron (+190), Pastrnak (+125) and even Travis Konecny (+255) are strong candidates this evening. Craig Smith is also an interesting pick at +325.

More player props expect to be available later in the day, but among shot totals, look towards some Boston players given some of Philadelphia’s metrics without Couturier.
