This NFC South battle is a rematch from a couple weeks ago, when the Panthers won on the road 23-16. Julio Jones was out for that game, but he looks ready to go for tonight. Takkarist McKinley, however, has been ruled out, while Atlanta tries to shop the pass rusher. Carolina, meanwhile, welcomed star running back Christian McCaffrey back to practice this week, though all reports are saying he is unlikely to return tonight. Left tackle Russell Okung is also doubtful.
The Falcons continue to amaze this season, finding the most unique ways to lose games. Last week, Todd Gurley scored the game-losing touchdown, as he left too much time on the clock for Matthew Stafford. However, just like last season, this looks to be about the time that Atlanta wins a couple games they aren’t supposed to. Favorites of 2.5 points or less this season are 6-15 against the spread. Could the trend continue on Thursday night, or will Atlanta pull another rabbit out of their hat to lose in another creative way?
Carolina has impressed this season, exceeding expectations put in place for them. Possibly the biggest surprise has been their pass defense, which allowed the third-fewest yards per pass attempt. However, this does seem skewed by the the quarterbacks they have played since they also allow the sixth-highest completion percentage. Offensively, they have looked great despite not having McCaffrey for most of the season. They have averaged 6.1 yards per play, which is tied for the fifth highest in the league. Moving the ball on Atlanta should not be a tough task in this one.
