Ben Rasa’s Pick: Abraham Ancer
Outright 30-1 (BetMGM)
Ancer was a big disappointment last week at the U.S. Open, failing to make the weekend. That broke a made-cut streak dating back to February, but let’s not overreact to one week. Ancer has been fantastic all year tee to green, and even last week he gained 5.2 strokes with the irons. That is exactly what he needs to deal with this TPC River Highlands layout, and I love Ancer’s course fit.
Ancer is 30-1 for an outright this week, and that’s a price I can get behind. Before the missed cut he had been in contention in several weeks, including a runner-up at Wells Fargo and a top-five at Valspar. Add in that Ancer has finished 11th and eighth in his last two appearances here with quality ball-striking numbers, and this is a generous number.
Jason Rouslin’s Pick: Paul CaseyÂ
Outright 18-1Â (BetMGM) Top 5 +300Â
Priced fourth on the big board, in front of Patrick Reed and equal to Patrick Cantlay, Casey has all the right things going for him. He is working on three straight top-10s and hasn’t missed a cut here in the least six years. Over that span, he has come in second twice, fifth twice and 32nd once. Given his recent form and course fit, the prices are justified and still present quality value for a name that is clearly coming into some good form.
Geoff Ulrich’s Pick: Russell Henley
Outright +5500 (BetMGM) | Top 10 +500 (BetMGM)
Henley is coming off a great U.S. Open that saw him tied for the lead going into the final round on Sunday. The fact he was even competing at the 7,700-yard Torrey Pines is a great indicator his game is in good shape, as he’s generally one of the shorter hitters off the tee on tour (ranked 169th in driving distance). Henley excels in the approach game, though, and comes in ranked first in strokes gained on approach and proximity from 125 to 150 yards. He has challenged at TPC River Highlands a couple times already too. In 2016 he held the lead here late on Sunday before five-putting on the back nine to finish 11th. He went off in the final grouping in 2018 before finishing sixth. This is a player who has seven top-10 finishes in his last 26 PGA Tour starts, so if you don’t like the outright odds — which are very fair — the top-10 odds here still look extremely attractive. Henley is playing too well not to break through soon, and he’s typically done his best work at the more approach/putting-driven courses like River Highlands.
Max Smotritskiy’s Pick: Carlos Ortiz
Outright 100-1 (BetMGM) | Top 10 +700 (BetMGM)
Going back to the well with Ortiz feels bad after he was a big miss at the U.S. Open. However, he gained two strokes tee to green in the two rounds he played last week. His short game really let him down at Torrey Pines, but the Travelers is all about ball striking, and Ortiz has done extremely well in that regard recently. Ortiz has gained 3.5 strokes on approach in his last five starts on tour and also has positive around-the-green and off-tee metrics in that span. He is also going back to his favorite surface in poa grass, which will hopefully be an ointment to his ailing putting stroke. Ortiz is a value at 100-1 in this tournament, and the top-10 and top-20 bets are also enticing.
