Jamie Pickett vs. Joseph Holmes

After earning his contract on Dana White’s Contender Series, Joseph Holmes will be making his UFC Middleweight debut against Jamie Pickett. A lot of prospects who earn contracts are fairly green and Holmes is no exception. The show is basically set up that if you have a finish you will get a contract and that is what Holmes did. He won by second-round submission against Shonte Barnes. Holmes has eight professional fights and he has won five of them by submission, however none of the guys he beat had much a grappling background. Pickett is probably a better wrestler than Holmes, so Holmes may struggle to get Pickett down to the mat. If the fight does hit the mat, Pickett is a brown belt in Jiu Jitsu so he will not be a fish out of water from bottom position. Pickett is currently a +135 underdog and if the odds were reversed and Holmes was a +135 underdog no one would really complain that is why it is a tad confusing that Pickett is the underdog here. Analyzing this fight the only area that Holmes would have the edge would be grappling but that edge is a lot closer than it looks. Pickett is the better striker and wrestler so getting plus money on him here is a very good bet.

Giga Chikadze vs. Calvin Kattar

In the main event tonight, Giga Chikadze will take on Calvin Kattar in a featherweight title eliminator. Chikadze has been on quite the run, winning his first seven UFC fights. He most recently knocked out both Cub Swanson and Edson Barboza. Calvin Kattar is coming off a loss to Max Holloway where Holloway landed 445 significant strikes, a UFC record, including 141 significant strikes alone in Round 4. If you combine both of the fighters recent performances that is why Kattar is a +205 underdog here. The line is off, even if you think Kattar should be the dog he shouldn’t be at +205. I am not a long-term believer in Chikadze, he is an elite kickboxer but he as low output, never landing more than 65 significant strikes in a fight, and only defends takedowns at 68%. Eventually he is going to run into someone who just puts a pace on him and mixes in wrestling and it will expose him game. Kattar could be that guy. Kattar fights at a very high pace landing 5.07 significant strikes per minute and is very durable as we saw against Holloway. Kattar has also proven he can go five rounds before, with both of his last two fights going the full five rounds. This is the first five round fight for Chikadze and if Kattar puts a pace on him, I am not confident he can last all five rounds. My bet here is Kattar at +205, just because the odds are way too wide here. Everyone is writing off Kattar but he is incredibly live here. Kattar by KO is +410 and Kattar KO in rounds 3-5 +1200 also interest me because if Chikadze does fade late, Kattar can put him away but even getting +205 is great.
