Against the Grain: PGA DFS Picks for the Zozo Championship | DraftKings + FanDuel

As we head into the offseason before peaking again at The Masters, the PGA DFS contests offered might be a tad lower than normal. This week it’s the Zozo Championship as we dig in and find the best against-the-grain PGA DFS Picks for from the slate for your fantasy golf lineups.

PGA DFS Player Focus

This week features 78 golfers with no cut.

PGA DFS Picks: $9,400-$12,000

  • 10 Golfers
  • Total ownership of around 150

There are 10 golfers here, with one totally unknown. Rory McIlroy’s price continues to drop, and ownership should follow. Webb Simpson seems like a good place to start a lineup given his price, and they likely will have the top two ownerships in this price category. Justin Thomas and Jon Rahm will both be owned around 20%, while Xander Schauffele, coming in as the highest-owned golfer, is likely to have his ownership trend down from last week. There will likely be a bit of a drop-off to Patrick Reed, Tyrrell Hatton, Collin Morikawa and Patrick Cantlay, all of whom are trending to be somewhere around 11-15% owned this week.

The one unknown that I mentioned is Tony Finau. We’ve recently seen Scottie Scheffler come back from COVID and struggle to find his elite footing again, so maybe there’s a bit of a lag time to catch up and gain full strength again. With all that, he’ll be the only one under 10% owned in the top 10 this week.

Top Against the Grain Plays

Getting a combined 22-25% on Cantlay and Morikawa is way too hard to pass up. They are both California boys, so the terrain shouldn’t feel foreign to them at all. The biggest risk is Finau, which is why I’d rather go to Morikawa, Cantlay or even Reed before heading to Finau.

PGA DFS Picks: Nos. 11-32 Priced Golfers ($7,500-$9,400)

  • 20 Golfers
  • Total ownership 210%

There is almost the exact total ownership and number of players here in this next section as last week, with Harris English and Joaquin Niemann trending higher this week. Niemann is on a run of good form, and English, after a blip at the Shriners bounced back with a good final three days at the CJ Cup. Viktor Hovland’s price remained the same after his fourth straight top 15, and his ownership will creep up this week, a tad higher than last. Daniel Berger hasn’t had his elite form now in a little bit. Even as his excitement wears off, he should get somewhere north of 10%.

We have 20 total golfers in this section, with a combined ownership of about 210%. It is spread out quite evenly, considering Niemann and English are projected just north of 15%, with the next batch of golfers including Sungjae Im, Russell Henley, Adam Scott, Abraham Ancer and Hideki Matsuyama coming in around 12-15% owned.

Then you may start seeing a few golfers go under 10%, including:

  • Matthew Wolff
  • Matthew Fitzpatrick
  • Scottie Scheffler

After those three, we should definitely get a handful of guys, around eight or so, that will likely be under 10% owned this week, including Bubba Watson. Watson had the biggest weekly increase in salary and will likely have tapered ownership across the fantasy golf landscape because of it. Here are a few of the other candidates that are likely to be under 10% owned this week:

  • Rickie Fowler
  • Paul Casey
  • Tommy Fleetwood
  • Tiger Woods
  • Jason Kokrak
  • Jason Day
  • Phil Mickelson

Top Against the Grain Plays

Mickelson, coming off a win on the Champions Tour and mid-priced in a no-cut event, is definitely enticing. I don’t think I can stomach it for my biggest lineup. I’ll certainly add some shares in my GPP lineups this week. I also like Fowler, Casey, Fleetwood, Woods, Wolff and Fitzpatrick this week.

PGA DFS Picks: The Rest ($7,400 and Below)

  • 48 Golfers
  • Total ownership of 230%

There are a couple of more Japanese tour players competing this week, 10 to be exact, versus the six Korean players last week. That is bringing the ownership as a whole down in this section. Still, there are plenty of golfers that will command a bit of ownership this week, including Lanto Griffin, Ryan Palmer, Sebastian Munoz, Bill Horschel and Cameron Champ. Champ last week got up to about 15% owned in the high-dollar stuff. He is likely going to be even higher owned than that this week. With five par 5’s per day, his ability to rack up DraftKings points in a hurry will be seen as a big benefit to him this week.

Cameron Smith, Matt Kuchar, Adam Hadwin, Gary Woodland, Joel Dahmen and Corey Conners are all likely to see close to 10% as well, especially in a no-cut scenario. A couple of out-of-form, former No. 1 golfers will be interesting talking points this week, as they are the cheapest price they’ve been in a while and both projecting for 6% or under this week: Justin Rose and Jordan Spieth. Plenty of other names that will come in under or at 5% this week, including:

  • Harry Higgs
  • Richy Werenski
  • Carlos Ortiz
  • Danny Lee
  • Tom Hoge
  • Tyler Duncan
  • Mark Hubbard
  • Marc Leishman

A sub-$7,000 Spieth at a no-cut event seems like a no-brainer to me. He’s proven me wrong plenty of times before. Higgs had it going for a couple of days there at Shadow Creek, as did Hoge, Lee, Duncan, Werenski and Hubbard. I’ll find a couple of spots for all of them in my GPP fantasy golf lineups this week.
