Above the Cut: PGA DFS Advice & Daily Fantasy Golf Picks for the Wyndham Championship on DraftKings & FanDuel

The PGA Tour regular season concludes this week with the Wyndham Championship. This event is not a marquee one, but it comes with a lot of extra storylines and drama since PGA Tour cards are on the line. There is a mix of bigger names and every-week PGA guys, and this week’s course gives up a ton of birdies. Let’s dive into the DFS golf strategy by looking at the course, field and salaries for lineups on DraftKings and FanDuel.

The Course

Sedgefield Country Club, located in Greensboro, N.C., is a par 70 measuring around 7,100 yards. This is another week where there will be bonuses and streaks, as this course has no defense. The course has some water, but other than that, low scores are there for the taking. Players will have two short par 5’s to dismantle and only a few par 4’s that creep into the 450- to 500-yard range. Most are 400 to 450 yards, making distance off the tee less important and placing a premium on precise approaches. There is no incentive for guys to take aggressive lines off the tee, and that will make this somewhat of a second-shot course, bringing in players who may have difficulties driving. The past history of the winners shows that this can turn into a wedge and putting contest, so those are two areas to focus on this week.

Greens are Bermuda but nothing players have not seen before, so strategy will be pretty straight up — targeting golfers good on the approach, specifically with shorter irons and wedges. Secondary factors like the FedEx Cup standings are things to consider, but those are more tiebreakers than anything.

The Field

There are a few big names looking to get some momentum heading into the FedEx Cup, starting with Hideki Matsuyama. He is followed by Louis Oosthuizen and Webb Simpson, who is known for absolutely loving this course and event. One guy who is not here is Patrick Reed, who withdrew to take a much-needed rest week before the playoffs begin.

Working down the field starts to unravel a bit, with a lot of guys feeling overpriced. That is not to say they cannot and will not get in the mix, but it is going to be an uncomfortable build. There are a lot of PGA Tour veterans and big names outside the top 125 mixed in with younger players looking to cap a solid showing. This makes it is an interesting dynamic when building and targeting DFS players.

The $6,000 range is full of guys with some red flags, but at the same time there are options for salary savers. In a field this wide open, the win equity is much more dispersed, and it would not be a shock to a see a few longshots in contention come Sunday.

Daily Fantasy Golf Picks: Wyndham Championship

Top Priced: Russell Henley — $9,400 DraftKings | $10,900 FanDuel

It makes sense to go to the top with Louis Oosthuizen, but for a more balanced look, Russell Henley is the guy. He can get hot with the irons, prefers Bermuda and has shown flashes of upside this year. Henley missed the cut at the British Open, but before that the irons were on fire. He gained at least three strokes on approach in three straight events, including two north of six strokes. This being an easy scoreable course suits his game, and Henley is a proven winner on tour. With his price being under $10,000, he allows a lot of build options, and his ownership seems reasonable at around 10% in Awesemo’s Daily Fantasy Golf Ownership Projections.

Also considering – Louis Oosthuizen, Sungjae Im

Mid-Range: Charl Schwartzel — $8,100 DraftKings | $9,700 FanDuel

The mid-range is loaded with risk/reward players who, if they connect the dots, could easily be holding the trophy come Sunday. Schwartzel has had a quality year, and that is mostly due to his improvement with the driver, which held him back at times. He has now gained strokes off the tee in seven of his last eight events and is coming in off a runner-up finish at the 3M Open. He can pour in putts, so that is a non-issue, and the downside has been mitigated somewhat now that he has less risk off the tee.

Similar to Henley, Schwartzel is around 10% in Awesemo’s Daily Fantasy Golf Ownership Projections, which is more than a fair number. It will be easy to get overweight on him without doing anything massive, and the price is just north of $8,000.

Also considering – Harold Varner, Joel Dahmen

Lower Priced: Jason Dufner — $6,700 DraftKings | $7,800 FanDuel

If spending up for Oosthuizen, the $6,000 range will be a necessity for salary relief. There are some options at the very bottom, but it would be better to stay in the upper-$6,000 range to round out teams. Jason Dufner has quietly found a string of form and heads into this tournament with some momentum. The last three finishes for Dufner are a respectable 28th, 26th and 18th, all of which pay off a sub-$7,000 price tag.

More important than the results are his strokes gained. Dufner has gained off the tee and with the irons in four straight events, which is rare for the lower ranges. The putter is an issue, but he has been around even in the last two events which is passable given some of his long-term struggles. Looking at the Pro Plays Tool, which rates some of Awesemo experts’ favorite exposures on the week, is my preferred spend-down option, and he makes for a fantastic sleeper pick this week.

Also Considering – Luke List, Roger Sloan
