Fantasy Golf: Make the Cut at The RBC Canadian Open

The purpose of this fantasy golf article is to help you “Make the Cut” in PGA DFS. Life on the PGA Tour can be grand but only if you make the weekend, and not coincidentally, the same goes for DFS Golf. The more golfers you have that Make the Cut, the better chance you’ll have at scoring more points. Simple. So, this article will serve as a must-read for those playing cash games (50-50’s, head-to-heads, etc.) each week. Unlike GPPs, which are all about building unique lineups that focus on high upside and high variance plays, cash game lineups should be made up of safer plays.

This isn’t the place to take fliers on sleeper plays as you might have found, the goal is to minimize the variance and see the players with excellent cut making ability as well as an ability to consistently finish inside the top-25. Our goal is to get 6/6 golfers through every week. Historically, just getting six golfers through the Friday cut has made you profitable over the year.

The article will highlight one top play in four price tiers for DraftKings pricing (Favorites, Secondary, Value, Deep Shot) since that’s where the most significant edge is to help you build strong lineups and determine core plays. Lastly, I’ll give you four additional “fill-ins” that are likely to be in my cash player pool (typically no more than ten golfers total).

Contest & fantasy golf lineup Strategy

Before we get into a recap, I think it’s essential to set the stage on how I attack cash games. I like to limit my bankroll to nothing more than 25% of my yearly roll, which this year candidly, I started with $10,000 in the “till.” So with that said, I invest upwards of $500 to $1000 in cash games. I will play a variety of head-to-head matches that include:

  • Randomly selected opponents at the and five dollar level
  • Selected Opponents at the $10 $20 and $50 $100 levels.

I will run anywhere from one to four lines using the eight players from this article and maybe one or at the most two more. And I’ll put my “best” lineup in the single entry massive double contests at the $25 and $50 levels and will play one $215 winner take all three man as my “big” cash game play.

Recap of last week

Pretty solid week for the core, which allowed me to pick up a bunch of satellites to the Millionaire Maker next week, which is what I’m using as my cash game contests for these weeks. My second lineup wasn’t as good and failed to cash in the couple of contest I put it in.

The RBC Canadian Open

North of the border we go, the only time of the year we get to say that! That’s not to say that there isn’t some beautiful golf up in Canada, but the tour sees it fit to only go up there once. There’s plenty of good golf to be had on the Mackenzie Tour, the professional golf tour of Canada, but for this week all eyes will be on Hamilton Golf & Country Club.

Format

Semi-full field event with 120 players with the top-70 and ties making the weekend.

Player Focus

*DK price listed first then FD

Favorite ($10,000+)

N/A. For the core, I don’t think you need to spend this much. Maybe for Rory, but none of the other four IMO is worth the price in a cash game setting.

Secondary ($8000-$9000)

Scott Piercy ($9,300/$10,500)

This is one of the highest price tags we’ve seen from Scott Piercy all year, but when you take out the top seven guys priced above him, he is the best player left in the field. Sergio Garcia and Webb Simpson are certainly viable options priced right above him; they’re a nice compliment to Scott in cash game format lineups. You might even be able to get all three if you can fall in love with enough low priced 7k options.

When we look at his strokes gained chart, we see that he seems to be peaking in all the right categories, including short game (putting + around the green) over the last four weeks, and ball striking over the previous seven weeks. Add that in with a win already at this golf course, albeit in 2012, should give him at least a tad bit of extra confidence heading to the first tee Thursday.

Adam Hadwin ($8,300/$9,300)

Call me a homer, or a sucker, or whatever you want but listen this guy put up more points than Jim Furyk did last week and he finished 19 places worse in the tournament. So that means he’s making birdies, but can’t seem to avoid the bogeys. Well, this course isn’t nearly as hard, we don’t think, as Muirfield Village, and he hit over 80% of his fairways last week. This is the first of that type of theme you are going to see from me in terms of my cash game lineups this week.

Turning our attention to the stats, and there does seem to be a decent amount of green on that board, trending above his 2019 baseline in both putting and his ball striking. Lastly, a Canadian will win this tournament again, so why not Adam, now?

Value ($7000-$8000)

Ryan Armour ($7,200/$8,500) & Brian Gay ($7,200/$8,900)

I guess I’m a bit of a theme chaser here, but Ryan Armour missed five fairways all week and was in the top-20 in terms of proximity with his wedges, and Brian Gay ranks 6th on the year hitting just about 72% of his fairways this year. Both fit the low-end 7K price range as well, which allows us to get two or three of those studs we just talked about. Armour is undoubtedly a form player, and with a nice showing last week, it gives me all the confidence to put him out there this week.

I’m not as sold on Brian Gay as I am on Armour. He’s coming off the missed cut last week, but a 13th place finish the week before shows me form isn’t that far off. It’s probably the most significant risk on the lineup, but with this course favoring the shorter hitters that find the fairway, it gives me a bit more confidence in the decision.

A quick note on the stats: Armour had a great week around the green last week, while Gay seems to be trending above his baseline in approaches over the last four and seven weeks.

Deep Shots ($6000-$7000)

Webb Simpson ($9,700)

Sergio Garcia ($9,500)

Jim Furyk ($8,800)

Russ Henley ($7,500)

Until next time,

Cheers,

Jason
