Against the Grain: Contrarian Fantasy Golf Picks for The AT&T Byron Nelson Classic on DraftKings & FanDuel | 5/11

Ownership plays a pivotal role in creating the perfect fantasy golf GPP lineup. Sometimes it’s the 5%-owned diamonds in the rough that make all the difference, and sometimes it’s those 7 to 10% golfers that not everyone wants to play for whatever the reason. Either way, each week in every GPP-winning lineup, there’s at least one golfer that would fit certain categories. This article will go over the golfers in three distinct pricing sections, a couple of the best against-the-grain picks, and the projected ownership for the week. Let’s get into some of the top fantasy golf picks for DraftKings and FanDuel PGA DFS lineups this week at the AT&T Byron Nelson Classic.

The week before a major is always a gamble to play some of the world’s best. The prevailing theory there is that if they get off to a bad start, it’s an easy exit on Friday to their next destination. But early on in the projections this week, it seems like gamers aren’t going to be taking that approach with the best, as five of the 14 golfers in this price range are projected to be over 20% owned. Matthew Fitzpatrick, Scottie Scheffler, Jon Rahm, Daniel Berger and Bryson DeChambeau are all projected north of 20%. Jordan Spieth isn’t far behind either, coming in right around 15%. He will be paired up with Scheffler and Will Zalatoris in the first two rounds. Zalatoris is expected to be around 15% owned as well. Others above 10% in this range include Si Woo Kim, Ryan Palmer and Sam Burns.

That will leave four options projected to be under 10%: Brooks Koepka, Hideki Matsuyama, Marc Leishman and Sergio Garcia.

The latter two here are more intriguing, as Koepka could still be injured and Matsuyama has likely not played all that much golf over the past month. Of the four, though, Matsuyama is projected with the most points, coming in at 88.2 this week. Be sure to check out the full PGA DFS projections and ownership projections.

PGA DFS Picks: Mid-Range ($8,800-$7,500)

  • 23 golfers

The top heaviness of this field can really be felt in the ownership, as only five of the 23 golfers are projected over 10% owned, compared to the previous section where everyone is projected around 7 to 10% owned. The five golfers that are likely to be the most clicked this week in this range are:

  • Si Woo Kim
  • Harris English
  • Talor Gooch
  • Carlos Ortiz
  • Doug Ghim

When ownership ends up coming out, it will be a bit more flat. Aaron Wise, Matt Kuchar, Charl Schwartzel and Keith Mitchell all are likely get around or over 10%. Charles Howell III is likely in this camp as well. Then there’s a pretty sizeable drop-off for the last 11 golfers in this pricing section. None of them will get over 7%, and most of them will be under 5% owned.

The ability to pick from a list of 11 names is a pretty decent player pool, and typically at least one or two golfers are interesting. This week Thomas Pieters and Cameron Champ seem like a good course fit, and both are playing well. Pieters is projected to score 68.9 points in our Awesemo daily fantasy golf projections.

PGA DFS Picks: The Rest ($7,400 and Below)

  • 120 Golfers

Out of 120 golfers in this section, only two of them have projected ownership of over 10%: Brandt Snedeker and Jhonattan Vegas. Vegas has the highest PGA DFS point projection of any golfer under 7,500 at 68.8 and Snedeker is second at 68.6. It is no surprise to see those two names up there with a lot of interest given their high projections as compared to their piers.

A few of the others expected to get around 10% are:

  • James Hahn
  • Scott Piercy
  • Wyndham Clark
  • K.H. Lee

Outside of them, there aren’t any other golfers with projections over 5%. Since there are still well over 100 golfers to choose from, here are a few that should make some lineups this week:

  • Patton Kizzire
  • Erik van Rooyen
  • Ryan Moore
  • Sepp Straka
  • John Catlin
  • Harry Higgs
  • Will Gordon
  • Anirban Lahiri
  • Andrew Putnam

Van Rooyen has the most appeal of those golfers given his PGA DFS projection of 67.8 fantasy points.
