A weak field always brings some ownership bubbles, especially when the top end of the field has some of the world’s best players. Only one of 13 golfers will be owned under 10% this week, with the other 12 getting between 15% and 30%. Rory McIlroy holds the rare feat of being the highest-priced golfer in the slate and the highest owned. He’ll come in north of 30% in some contests. A few other Masters favorites, Jordan Spieth and defender of the green jacket Hideki Matsuyama, will be owned around 20% this week, as will Corey Conners coming off a third-place finish at last week’s Match Play, coming back to where his career kicked off. After Monday qualifying for this event, Conners went on to win and has never looked back, becoming one of the most consistent performers on tour from tee to green.

Abraham Ancer broke out of his slump at last week’s Match Play as well, losing in the Elite Eight, and he will also come in close to 20%. Then there will be a bit of a drop-off down the other golfers as gamers are still trying to figure out what to do with Bryson DeChambeau, who, if he were at his best, would be about $1,000 more expensive than he is this week. His ownership upon first round is about 11%. Maverick McNealy is also getting plenty of love, checking in with about 15% ownership, as is Gary Woodland, who continues his resurgence. Chris Kirk, Keegan Bradley and the struggling Tony Finau all come in with around 10-12% ownership this week. One note on Finau, though, is he did birdie his last five holes in the Match Play to beat Xander Schauffele, so maybe that’s all he needed to get his mojo back?

The personal side of these golfers is rarely discussed and coupled with their results on the course, but for Jason Day it’s undoubtedly been a tough year off the course. The loss of his mother, a great ally to him, has undoubtedly affected him personally. On the course, things were looking up after he came in a tie for third at the Farmers Insurance Open. It moved him back up to 83rd in the world and was a few good starts away from getting back inside the top 50 in the world. But then the passing of his mother led to him withdrawing from a few starts, and since he’s been back he hasn’t made the weekend, missing the cut at both the Players and the Valspar Championship. However, a third-place finish at one of the premier PGA Tour events of the year gives hope to those that back Day, as it’s a win-or-nothing week in San Antonio.

PGA DFS Mid-Range ($8,900-$7,500)

  • 22 golfers

This is quite common in weak fields, where ownership is so concentrated on the first 10 golfers or so. This week is exactly that, with a grand total of five golfers that aren’t priced above $9,000 being owned over 10%. Those golfers this week are:

  • Adam Hadwin
  • Jhonattan Vegas
  • Luke List
  • Patton Kizzire
  • Sahith Theegala

With over 120 golfers in the field, there should be a plethora of golfers that will get close to 10% this week. A few of them from this price range are:

  • Kevin Streelman
  • Davis Riley
  • Mito Pereira
  • Rasmus Hojgaard
  • Brendan Steele
  • K.H. Lee
  • Doug Ghim
  • Ian Poulter
  • Denny McCarthy

That leaves eight golfers likely to be projected at or under 5% this week from this price range. One of the eight is a big talking point this week in Charley Hoffman. Hoffman made waves earlier in the season at the Waste Management Phoenix Open in calling the PGA Tour out in a rant about “protecting players.” Since then he’s come in last place at the Genesis Invitational and missed cuts at the Players and the Valspar. He hasn’t finished in the top 10 since last year’s Charles Schwab Challenge but also has only finished outside of the top 13 here twice since 2012. That includes two second-place finishes and a first-place finish back in 2016.

There are still plenty of names outside of Hoffman that won’t be owned over 5%. One of those names is Robert MacIntyre, who comes over to the U.S.A. for a stretch of weeks trying to earn himself a PGA Tour card. It wasn’t a great start at the Match Play last week, but he should find a good fit here in San Antonio. Rickie Fowler and Matt Kuchar will give their best shot at getting into the Masters with a win this week, and both come with mild ownership as well.

PGA DFS Value Plays ($7,400 and Below)

Not one golfer under $7,500 this week will be owned over 10%. This is pretty standard for weak-field events, as no golfer sticks out to any gamer more so than the others in this range. Golfers that could get close to 10% ownership this week include:

  • Troy Merritt
  • Richard Bland
  • Dylan Frittelli
  • Matthias Schwab
  • Alex Smalley
  • David Lipsky

Among those golfers, Troy Merritt is projected to score the most points according to Awesemo’s PGA DFS Projections, with a projected score of 61.6 points. Be sure to check out how all of the Awesemo experts are ranking these golfers in the Pro Plays Tool.
