Last Week Review

We are spitting hot fire. A winner last week and 11 for 12 over our last four weeks. Let’s keep this heater going over at the Rocket Mortgage Tostitos Pep Boys Alamo golf bowl this week, in Detroit Michigan.

Last week results

Chez Reavie: 1st

Bryson DeChambeau: 8th

Lucas Glover: MC

The course

Detroit Golf Club is a classical, Pete Dye Donald Ross designed, 7,340 yard P-72, with a single water hazard and narrowish, tree-lined fairways. Most experts are predicting scoreable conditions this week with three reachable Par 5s and shorter, four short Par 4s that are under 400 yards.

Slate strategy

On FanDuel, the pricing is soft, as per usual. You can fit in THREE of the big boys, while still having enough cash left over for some decent scrubs. The top will be chalk and for good reason – they’re all great value. According to Steve Bamford, who writes an excellent column breaking down golf courses each week, we’re expecting “fast greens with lots of movement and contours on the green complexes.”

On DraftKings, the pricing much tighter. Taking more than one player at the top leaves you with some tough options below 7K. If you’re playing Dustin Johnson (and you probably are), figuring out who to pair him with is going to be crucial. His 12K salary leaves you with just $7,600 left, which is going to lead to some chalky plays in that range (Charles Howell, Byeong-Hun An). Rostering DJ-An-Howell will be the most common build, so if you’re going that route, make sure you’ve got some low-owned players to fill out your lineups.

Fantasy Golf PGA DFS Picks

With little data to go on, we’re going full “trust the projections” mode this week, keeping things short and sweet. These new courses give us an opportunity to not overthink course fit and simply take the best plays in the model.

Aaron Wise: Grades: B, Values: B, A

Wise is trending up. Over his last 24 rounds, he’s 12th in the field in SG:T2G after a slump that saw him lose strokes in five of six tournaments to start 2019. Over that same time span, Wise is fourth in the field in Birdie or Better percentage. He’s a solid value on DraftKings and an even better deal on FanDuel, with the third best Vegas Bargain Rating in the field.

Wyndham Clark: Grades: C, Values: B

Clark has some interesting stats. There aren’t too many players out there that bomb it off the tee, have terrible ball striking and approach numbers and an amazing short game. The Oregon grad from Denver, Colorado, rebounded at the Travelers last week, with five SG:T2G and a 15th place finish after a run of six brutal tournaments in a row. He makes for a great GPP play, because if he’s on, he’s tallying birdies with the best of them. Over his last 50 rounds on tour he’s fourth in the field in Birdie or Better percentage, one spot below Dustin Johnson. He’s also sixth in the field in P5 scoring and 12th in the key P4 scoring range.

Si Woo Kim: Grades: C, Values: B

Nobody is less consistent than Si Woo. He’s either gonna DFL or get you a top-five finish, which is what we’re always looking for in GPPs. I like to get on board when he’s had a bad run of form because he pops out of nowhere. Si Woo is tenth in the field in strokes gained on Pete Dye Donald Ross courses over the last 50 rounds. That’s probably not predictive, but it’s definitely an angle. He’s also third in SG: Putting on bent/poa and 20th in SG:T2G on 7,400 yard, P-72 courses. And of course, the beauty is you won’t need much ownership to get over the field. I’m guessing he’ll come in somewhere around 3%.

Low-owned GPP Fliers

Because he was a late entry, Taylor Gooch didn’t get much touting love this week. Our new premium leverage score has him projected for 1% ownership, with a 3.5% chance at finishing in the top-six this week. He’s got the best score on the slate. Column favorite JB Holmes rates out as a nice contrarian play as well.

Ownership fades

This is tough, because there is so little value on this slate. The ownership is going right where it should, to players like Charles Howell III and Ben An, but according to our leverage scores, you should be careful with some of these mid-tier players like Kevin Streelman. We have him ranked dead last on both FanDuel and DraftKings for leverage scores.
