PGA DFS: Against the Grain Picks for the Honda Classic

Whether it’s your first time reading or you’re a seasoned vet, this article covers GPP PGA DFS picks for fantasy golf. It also breaks the field down into four price categories for FanDuel, DraftKings and Yahoo PGA DFS. The article is meant to be a guiding tool in creating variance in your lineups, which in turn, hopefully, can create an edge against the field.

The PGA DFS First Look

Winning a GPP of any size is a difficult task, especially ones with 40,000-plus entries. Each of my big wins has come by going against the grain with some players and pairing them with the right chalk.

Last Week Recap

There were no real standouts from the article or the ownership. With only 72 golfers to project, the RSQs came down quite a bit. We will bounce back this week.

$9,500 and Above

Commentary

I bring this out to $9,500 this week since, for the first time in quite a while, DraftKings decided to put only four guys above $10,000. So with that, I added in three more guys, giving us seven to talk about. Not one of them is going to get below 13%, and that’s no surprise as the field lacks the top-heavy talent we are used to seeing. Rickie Fowler, even with his lackluster results this season, is trending to be the most popular play of the bunch, along with Gary Woodland. Then I suspect that even though Justin Rose seems out of form, he’ll be owned around 15% as gamers look to reduce the salary spent on the top guy.

Lastly, at the lowest ownership of the bunch will be Tommy Fleetwood and Brooks Koepka — one because of the price (Fleetwood) and one because of their form (Koepka). Louis Oosthuizen is also a bit out of form, while Viktor Hovland coming off of his first win may keep people away.

Hovland and Koepka carrying combined ownership of 25% or less seems very enticing. I think I’ll do a couple of those stacks.

$8,000-$9,499

Commentary

Billy Horschel seems to be the first name everyone wants to click this week, projected for over 20%, or just under by my projections. Byeong Hun An, after a dreadful putting day on Thursday last week, has gamers heading right back to him. Sungjae Im is also projected to be above 15%, along with Daniel Berger. After those four, however, it looks like ownership could be quite spread out, with only Joaquin Niemann and Erik van Rooyen getting close to 10%.

That leaves Shane Lowry, J.T. Poston, Ian Poulter, Ryan Palmer and Emiliano Grillo right around 10%. Luke List and Charl Schwartzel will be the two golfers that are all but guaranteed to be less than 10% owned.

Lowry, at less than 10% ownership, seems like a great buying opportunity in a grind-it-out event. He is good with his irons, and an above-average short game should provide good stability here this week.

$7,000s

Commentary

Four golfers below $8,000 this week should get above 10% with Harris English leading the way at 13%. Brian Harman, Lucas Glover and Matthew NeSmith are also trending toward that 10% number, as are Bud Cauley and Russel Knox. To a lesser extent, I suspect gamers to not give up on Jim Furyk entirely, while Denny McCarthy hasn’t missed a cut in a while and will get some interest. Wyndham Clark had a chance to win here last year, and young stud Matthew Wolff will also get plenty of attention this week. Outside of them, there are still plenty of golfers under 10% owned, including:

  • Maverick McNealy
  • Keith Mitchell
  • Keegan Bradley
  • Harry Higgs
  • Cameron Tringale

Since this is a full field, there will also be plenty of golfers owned under 5% from this price section, including:

  • Xinjun Zhang
  • Cameron Davis
  • K.H. Lee
  • Adam Schenk
  • Kurt Kitayama
  • Matt Wallace

Try and get at least one guy from either one of the last two bulleted lists. I like Mitchell here again; even though he seems a bit expensive, he found a bit of form toward the back half of the west coast swing.

$6,000s

Commentary

Tom Hoge has endured the best start to a PGA Tour season in his short career on tour. He likely comes with 10% ownership. Or close to it. Chase Seiffert has also been quite consistent, along with Tyler McCumber, who are both around 5% owned this week. Dylan Frittelli has been awful and his price is reflective of that, but he still should be owned around 5%. A couple of other noteworthy names like Zach Johnson and Stewart Cink are likely to see a little interest as well.
