PGA DFS: Against the Grain Picks for the CJ Cup (FREE)

Whether it’s your first time reading, or you’re a seasoned vet, this article covers GPP PGA DFS picks for fantasy golf. It also breaks the field down into four price categories for FanDuel, DraftKings, and Yahoo PGA DFS. The article is meant to be a guiding tool in creating variance in your lineups, which in turn, hopefully, can create an edge against the field. Winning a GPP of any size is a difficult task, especially ones with 40,000-plus entries. Each of my big wins has come by going against the grain with some players and pairing them with the right chalk. Now, these picks are meant only for Game Theory plays, and may not ultimately in my player pool.

A quick recap of last week- The Houston Open

Lanto Griffin‘s insane ownership distorts these numbers a bit, but still probably the worst RSQ I’ve seen since we started. I’m sure we will bounce back this week with more known golfers in the field.

Player focus this week

$10,000 range

Commentary

Seven golfers, the most we’ve seen over $10,000 in a tourney for a long time, is sure to create ownership bubbles. Right off the top, Justin Thomas continues to trend upwards as gamers rightfully bank on recent form and course fit to propel Thomas to the top again this week. The higher he goes, the lower Brooks Koepka gets, but is he healthy enough to warrant the price? The next four will be spread around 15% with maybe Viktor Hovland leading the pack closer to 20%, with Hideki Matsuyama, Tommy Fleetwood and Collin Morikawa getting between 15-20%.

Maybe DraftKings is just trying to help me out here with the Golden Boy? Jordan Spieth is $10,000 for the first time since the AT&T Pebble Beach last year, in a much stronger field. His odds at 26/1 are also the best I’ve seen in quite some time. Maybe the books didn’t want to get burned since Spieth has been away from the game for almost two months now, and thus gave him the short odds, but in reality, he isn’t there yet… Whatever the case may be, there isn’t a bat chance in you know what I’m passing up sub-5 %.

Top ATG play

It’s already been said.

$8000-$9000 range

Fantasy Golf Commentary

Matthew Wolff is likely to lead this price section as the shiny new toys of the tour are the center focus. After him, I think we see Gary Woodland, Jeju island-native Sungjae Im and Marc Leishman, all between 13 and 20%.

That leaves us with 14 golfers, and I don’t think any of them are going to get below 5% this week. The lowest looks like it’ll be Kevin Na, Andrew Putnam, Dylan Frittelli and Danny Willet, all playing good golf right now, with the other ten getting somewhere between 10 and 15%.

 Top PGA DFS ATG Play

Ben and I mentioned on the show last that Willett has turned his game around. If he’s under 10% this week, then I’ll gladly take 2 times. The same goes for Putnam, as well.

$7,000 range

Ian Poulter has been way out of form lately, missing cuts, and coming toward the back end of the pack, but it seems as though gamers are ok to overlook that his week, coming in well north of 10%, towards 15. Corey Conners has been gaining traction this week, and will be joined by five others that should be owned over 10% this week that are:

  • Ryan Palmer
  • Charles Howell III
  • Luke List
  • Rory Sabbatini
  • Harold Varner III

I think there is also an opportunity for Pat Perez, who has played well here each of the last two years and is coming off a great finish at the Shriners, to be owned over 10%, along with Scott Piercy. It’ll be very interesting to see what gamers do on the whole with Abraham Ancer and Emiliano Grillo. Both are out of form and have missed multiple cuts over the fall swing. Maybe a no-cut event will change their fortune a bit.

The last bucket of golfers we have is where you should be able to get some leverage this week, and that list is:

  • Phil Mickelson
  • Joel Dahmen
  • Graeme McDowell
  • Jazz Janewattananond

PGA DFS Picks

I think having at least one of those guys from the above-bulleted list be in your lineup. Right now, I’d probably rank them Jazz, Joel, Graeme, Phil, but will have shares of all of them.

$6,000 range

PGA DFS Commentary

No surprise to see more than typical ownership being generated by the $6,000 guys this week with the no-cut event. Two golfers are likely to set the pace down here as Brian Stuard comes in with some great form, and Vaughn Taylor has also been playing well. The next three projected guys however haven’t been playing well but are all expected to be relatively popular:

  • Jhonattan Vegas
  • Troy Merritt
  • Kieth Mitchell

After then we should see another ten guys get above 5%, which again is much more than average. The list of guys I’ll be playing this week are:

  • Kevin Tway
  • Wyndham Clark
  • Charley Hoffman
  • Si Woo Kim
  • J.B. Holmes
  • C.T. Pan

Also, check-in around Noon-time for my entire player pool in this week’s version of the “Winning Element.”

Cheers,
