PGA DFS: Against the Grain Picks for the WGC-Mexico (FREE)

Whether it’s your first time reading or you’re a seasoned vet, this article covers GPP PGA DFS picks for fantasy golf. It also breaks the field down into four price categories for FanDuel, DraftKings and Yahoo PGA DFS. The article is meant to be a guiding tool in creating variance in your lineups, which in turn, hopefully, can create an edge against the field.

Winning a GPP of any size is a difficult task, especially ones with 40,000-plus entries. Each of my big wins has come by going against the grain with some players and pairing them with the right chalk.

Last Week Recap

There has been a bit of a lag here the last two weeks, as the Awesemo guys received a B for their work last week at just shy of 86%. I was able to edge them out for only the second time this year, as I came in a tick below 88%.

In terms of the article, Abraham Ancer was under 10% owned but didn’t have a profitable week for those that rostered him, and Tiger Woods finished in last. We will look to bounce back this week.

Player Focus This Week

This week has no cuts and all 72 players will play 18 holes, unless they withdraw.

$10,000 and Above

Commentary

This being a no-cut event has me really surprised that DraftKings didn’t give Rory McIlroy a $12,000 price tag. With that will come high ownership, higher than last week most likely, even though he wasn’t able to close it out on Sunday. Dustin Johnson projects for over 20% ownership with a $1,000 price bump. That should keep his ownership down a little, but normally when gamers start to go to Johnson, they don’t stop until he does. Let’s see if that holds true this week.

Justin Thomas is coming off his second missed cut in three starts, which seems odd. He will look to have a bounce-back top-five like he did out in Arizona and will likely carry the same ownership as Jon Rahm and Hideki Matsuyama.

Top Against the Grain Plays

With the top-two guys drawing a lot of attention, you should be able to go 30% and get double of any of the next three. Rahm hasn’t put it all together yet this year, and ownership seems to be trending down. Soon, maybe this week, will be the week to jump in.

$8,000-$9,999

Commentary

Webb Simpson is coming off of a thrilling win over Tony Finau in Scottsdale, and while his course history looks quite bad, it seems as though his ownership is going to stay high. Collin Morikawa, who was one of the last to qualify for the event, continues to get a lot of attention in the mid-$8,000 price range. Matt Kuchar’s low price and low ownership the previous week will likely push people back to him, and he is coming in around 15%. Then the next batch of golfers who will be owned between 13 and 20% include: Adam Scott, Tommy Fleetwood, Xander Schauffele, Louis Oosthuizen, Gary Woodland,  Paul Casey, Patrick Reed and Bryson DeChambeau. We should then get at least a couple of golfers under 10%, including Jordan Spieth, Marc Leishman, Sergio Garcia and Matthew Fitzpatrick.

Top Against the Grain Plays

Garcia is a bit intriguing. He didn’t get it going entirely last week but didn’t hurt you. Now, $800 more expensive, he’ll need to get it going to pay off the price tag, but could be worth the investment at low ownership.

$7,000s

Commentary

Sungjae Im has not figured out Riveria, missing the cut for the second straight year. That gives him one of his first sub-$8,000 price tags of the year. His ownership remains mild, though, coming in around 15%. He’s joined at that ownership level by Scottie Scheffler, Byeong Hun An, Abraham Ancer, Kevin Kisner and Victor Perez from the Euro Tour. Perez has had a scorching hot start to the year, excluding one Sunday round. After them, however, we won’t get many more golfers over 10%, as in a no-cut, the ownership is more evenly spread out as gamers try to differentiate. A few names I like are:

  • Corey Conners
  • Rafa Cabrera Bello
  • Shane Lowry

There is plenty of other names that will be owned around that area, like Charles Howell III, Brandt Snedker, Billy Horschel, Tyrell Hatton and Jason Kokrak. That leaves us still with at least eight names that will be owned at or under 5% this week, including:

  • Kurt Kitayama
  • Sung Kang
  • Robert MacIntyre
  • Francesco Molinari
  • Chez Reavie
  • Danny Willett
  • Bernd Wiesberger

Top Against the Grain Plays

At least one of the guys from the list above will be in every GPP lineup this week.

$6,000s

Mexico native Carlos Ortiz leads the below-$7,000 section, getting close to 10% this week. Lanto Griffin also seems to be gaining traction, coming in around 10%, with Matthias Schwab and Sebastian Munoz next up on the list, but still likely below 10%. Lucas Glover, Brendan Todd, Mike Lorenzo-Vera, Erik van Rooyen and Lee Westwood could all push 5% this week, leaving us with at least 1o options to chose from of golfers that will be owned under 5%. A few of them are Jazz Janewattananond, Shaun Norris and Shugo Imahira.
