PGA DFS: Course History for the Sony Open

Wailiaie Country Club has been host to this annual PGA event for over fifty years. That seems like a pretty good sample size when we analyze stats from prior events. In fact, it’s one of the longest standing tournaments on the tour’s rotation. Lets dig into some course fits for our PGA DFS lineups.

PGA DFS Course Fit

The topic of course history has been widely debated in the PGA DFS industry. No matter which way you tend to lean, there is certainly something to be said about a golfer’s game fitting a certain style of course. That’s not debatable. So we dive into the history to see if we can identify a pattern and see why a golfer may be a great fit at this specific course. Here are the top findings from this week:

*All stats are from 2013 to present.

Positive:

  • Matt Kuchar, Charles Howell and Brian Stuard all have four top-10s. Kuchar has played it five times, Howell seven times and Stuard six. There was only one missed cut in 18 tries between the three of them with one win.
  • Marc Leishman and Zach Johnson highlight two of the five golfers that have three top 10s, while Justin Thomas and Kevin Kisner highlight the golfers with at least two top 10s.
  • Six golfers have finished inside the top 25 in all of their starts but three of them only have one start: Xinjun Zhang, Sebastian Munoz and Sungjae Im. The other three to have done so in at least two attempts or more are Kuchar, Keith Mitchell and Webb Simpson.
  • When we stretch out to the top 25, Kuchar and Simpson lead the way with five, along with Howell. Scott Piercy, Brian Harman and Jerry Kelly all have four in seven attempts.
  • 17 golfers have made the cut in all their starts with a minimum of two starts. Some of the highlights include Kyle Stanley, Zac Blair, Daniel Berger and Howell, who hasn’t missed a cut in any of the years since 2013.

Negative:

  • Bud Cauley and Eric Dugas are the only two golfers that have at least three starts and have missed the cut each time here in Hawaii. Troy Merritt is 1-for-6 with no top 25s and Jim Herman has five in seven attempts. David Hearn also has no top 25’s in six attempts here.
  • Jaime Lovemark, Peter Malnati and Satoshi Kodaira have each missed the cut the last two years here. along with Meritt and Dugas.
