PGA DFS: Course History for The Players Championship

PGA DFS: The start of the Florida Swing brought two of the most difficult week’s players will face all year. Both PGA National and Bay Hill played incredibly tough with above-average winds and higher-than-normal rough. Add in the final factor of rock hard greens that were lightning quick and you have the making for major-like conditions.

Now, the Tour heads up as far north as possible in Florida to Jacksonville. It houses one of the best courses on the rotation, the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass. The Players Championship has been played here for quite some time, so we have a ton of data to work off of.

Awesemo is running a special PGA Giveaway for the Players Championship on March 12! Win an Awesemo+ Yearly Pass by guessing the WINNER of the Players Championship HERE. One random winner will be selected among all correct entries. Good luck!

*This week, I’ve added in a Deeper Dive section that looks at golfers priced below $7,500 on DraftKings.

Course Fit

The topic of course history has been widely debated in the PGA DFS industry. No matter which way you tend to lean, there is certainly something to be said about a golfer’s game fitting a particular style of course. That’s not debatable. So we dive into the history to see if we can identify a pattern.

TPC Sawgrass has some of the most iconic finishing holes in all of golf with the par-5 16th, the island green 17th and the tough par-4 18th. The course also provides excellent viewing for all patrons.

PGA DFS Positives

*All stats are from 2013 to present.

  • Four golfers in the field have more than two top-10’s here since 2013. Oddly enough, half of them, Jason Day and Francesco Molinari, withdrew from last week’s tournament. The other two are Rory McIlroy, who has four, and Sergio Garcia, who has three. Day and Molinari also have three.
  • Six additional golfers have found themselves on the first page of the leaderboard twice over the last seven years: Tommy Fleetwood, Hideki Matsuyama, Brandt Snedeker, Jim Furyk, Justin Rose, and Brian Harman.
  • This is one of the hardest tournaments to make the cut, given how deep the field us. Only five golfers in the entire field have made the cut in all of their starts with a minimum of three: Garcia, Fleetwood, Rory Sabbatini, Adam Scott, and Branden Grace.
  • Lastly, Matsuyama has the best top-25 percentage, coming in the top 25 five out of the six years he’s competed. He missed the cut only once, in 2018 when he was coming back from being injured.

PGA DFS Negatives

  • I remember it well, the site of Phil Mickelson‘s and Jim “Bones” Mackay’s breakup. It was the par-3 17th hole and Mickelson was playing well. He was near the top 10 with only two holes left. And then he took Mackay’s recommendation and landed it three yards further than he needed to, and on 17, there is no margin for error. Mickelson has missed six out the last seven cuts here, and Harris English, J.B. Holmes, Brian Stuard, Kevin Streelman, Jason Kokrak, Aaron Baddeley and Danny Willett have missed at least five cuts. Matt Jones, Vaughn Taylor and Troy Merritt have only made the cut once in four tries.
  • Bubba Watson is joined by Charley Hoffman, Michael Thompson and most of the above golfers that don’t have a top-25 here in at least five starts since 2013. Rickie Fowler, Ryan Moore, and Billy Horschel all have one in seven tries.

TPC Sawgrass Deep Dive: Course History Under $7,500

  • The top four names above have only competed once, last year, all coming in the top 30. The fourth name on the list, Si Woo Kim has made the cut every time he’s played in the event, including a win in 2017.
  • We already mentioned Sabbatini as a guy that hasn’t missed a cut here in the last six tries, while Mackenzie Hughes is 2-for-2 and Emiliano Grillo is 3-for-4 including three straight. Ryan Palmer and Jimmy Walker have three top-25s in the last seven years, joining Molinari as the only golfers under $7,500 to do so.
  • Lastly, Ian Poulter has made five straight cuts here including two-top 11’s in the last three years.
