PGA DFS Tournament Intro: Mayakoba Golf Classic

This Week’s Course(s): Sea Island Resort- Seaside & Plantation

Course & Tournament Commentary

This is our first dual-course tournament of the year. We usually have about five tournaments a year where this happens, done to accommodate field size and subsequent length of sunlight in a day. The two courses are part of the beautiful Sea Island Resort in Sea Island, Georgia, about an hour and a half from Jacksonville. While it sits right on the coast, there aren’t many holes that actually border the ocean, but plenty that border run-offs from it. It sets up similar to a links-style course found in Scotland and Ireland with rolling Bermuda fairways and greens.

A ton of professional golfers call this area home, one of the most concentrated home areas for pros, ranking up there with Scottsdale and Jupiter. However, that doesn’t always mean we get strong fields, as this is one of the weaker ones of the year. The tournament itself had changed sponsors twice since 2010 when it debuted as PGA Tournament and has been the RSM Classic now in its fifth year. There are 156 players in the field this week, and the players will alternate between the Seaside and Plantation courses for rounds one and two and will play only the seaside course for rounds three and four.

Fantasy Golf Player & Statistical Preview

PGA DFS Commentary

Webb Simpson and Matt Kuchar, two tour veterans and Presidents cup teammates will headline the field this week. Billy Hosrchel continues his strong form while defending champion Charles Howell III and local Kevin Kisner round out the top-five ranked players in the field. Scottie Scheffler continues his steady fall and will also get a ton of attention. Alex Noren returns to the PGA Tour looking to get as many FedEx Cup points as he can, as he did not finish in the top 125 last year.

But possibly the biggest story of the week is can Brendan Todd make it three in a row? As of right now, he’s still in the field, and it would be a feat that’s basically unheard of in this day and age. Let’s check in on some statistics to see if his game fits the profile.

Fantasy Golf Statistical Preview: RSM Classsic

Winners of the past couple of years would certainly suggest you don’t need to be overly long off the tee to win here, but it can certainly help you. Howell III, last year’s winner, ranked 32nd on tour last year in driving distance and had an average of 11 shots under 150 yards per round at the seaside course. Previous winners Austin Cook ranked 120th, and Mackenzie Hughes ranked 67th.

Here’s this week’s quick fix stat report:

  • Driving Accuracy vs. Driving Distance: It seems distance, nor accuracy, is paramount this week, preferably a tee ball that gives the gives you a good look for the approach.
  • Strokes Gained Analysis:  Other than putting, strokes gained approach is the most significant correlation to the winners over the last five years.
  • Putting…Do you need it to be good here? This is a bit harder to digest this week, as Howell III isn’t a great putter by any stretch, but had a great week, as did Hughes in 2017. So I’ll be looking at my screener this week for golfers that have shown they can get hot with the putter.

Join Ben Rasa & I Tuesday night at 8:30 PM on the Awesemo YouTube Channell for some more great info on this week’s tournament!

Cheers!
