PGA DFS: The Fit & Form Guide for the Corales Punta Cana Championship

During the 10-week hiatus, we worked on our content to deliver you the best possible info out there. One of those changes was combining the course history and recent form articles to showcase two of the most essential elements when building out PGA DFS lineups each week. Since we were on a 10-week hiatus, we’ll use form from this year and course history back to 2015. Let’s get into the Fit & Form guide to make your PGA DFS picks for your daily fantasy lineups on DraftKings and FanDuel for the Corales Puntacana Championship

Form From Past 11 Weeks

It is a full field of 144 players this week, with players competing across all different tours in the world — some on the European Tour, some on the Korn Ferry Tour and others competing in amateur events. I’ll give you the synopsis of all the best performers, regardless of which tour they play on.

Positive

Top 10s

The best players in the world may not be playing this week, but this section doesn’t change much in terms of who we are talking about: Will Zalatoris. Zalatoris has finished in the top 10 five times in the past 11 weeks, spanning eight events. Mackenzie Hughes and Thomas Detry are the only two with top 10s on the highest level of professional golf, each with three. Alex Smalley and Justin Suh have three each on the LocalIQ Series competition. Emiliano Grillo, Kristoffer Ventura and Roberto Diaz are the only others with multiple top 10s over the last 11 weeks.

Top 25s

Zalatoris leads this as well, obviously, with eight top 25s in eight tries over the last 11 weeks. Hughes, Suh and Ventura have four, while Detry leads a list of nine with three. Sam Burns, Xinjun Zhang, Pat Perez, Charley Hoffman and Ben Martin all have three.

Cuts

Outside of Zalatoris and Suh, who haven’t missed a cut in the last 11 weeks, Adam Schenk is the only golfer with more than one start that also has not missed one cut in the previous 11 weeks. A couple of others, are on a good streak, however, like Adam Long and Patrick Rodgers. Long has six straight, and Rodgers and Micheal Gligic both have five straight.

Negative

Top 10s

One hundred fourteen golfers of the 144 competing this week will be searching for the first top 10 in the last 11 weeks. A few of the more notable names in this field that haven’t earned a top 1o include Jhonattan Vegas, Kyle Stanley, Matt Jones, Sepp Straka and Doug Ghim.

Top 25s

Of those 114, only around 30 have a top 25, including some of those mentioned above. A few golfers that haven’t are Kurt Kitayama, Matthew NeSmith, C.T. Pan, Kevin Tway and Brice Garnett.

Cuts

Eighteen golfers have teed it up at least twice in the last 11 weeks and have failed to make a weekend. Two golfers, Sebastian Cappelen and Martin Trainer, have missed all five cuts. When one misses this many cuts in a row, golf becomes a very expensive hobby rather than a profession. We’ll see if a trip to the beach can help turn the tides for some of these golfers. Others who haven’t earned a paycheck in a bit include Dominic Bozzelli, Shawn Stefani, Zack Sucher and Grayson Murray.

Course History @ Punta Cana Corales since 2016

This course has been used now for the last four years by professional golf — the first two on the Korn Ferry Tour and the previous two for the PGA Tour. Only one golfer has played all four years: Schenk. He has made the cut in each of those starts as well.

Positive

Top 10s

Two golfers have multiple top 10s here in the last four years: Seamus Power and Kelly Kraft. Others with at least one include Hughes, Jonathan Byrd, D.J. Trahan, Aaron Baddeley and Chris Stroud.

Top 25s

Sam Ryder and George McNeill join Power and Kraft as the only golfers in the field that have two top 25s here at Corales Punta Cana since 2016. Others with one include Denny McCarthy, Corey Conners, Tway and Burns.

Cuts

There are a handful of golfers that have competed here in the Dominican Republic at least three times over the past four years and have made the cut in all of them: Byrd, Power and Kyoung-hoon lee. Remember, Schenk is 4-for-4, while golfers like Jones, Tway, David Hearn and Ryan Brehm are all 3-for-3.

Negative

Top 10s

One hundred and twenty golfers, including 47 golfers who have never teed it up here, will be in search of their first top 10.

Top 25s

That number decreases by about 20 when we move the parameters to top 25, leaving plenty of golfers in search of their first good start at this course. A couple of names that have competed here but don’t have a top 25 are Vegas, Detry, Straka, Grillo, Wes Roach and John Merrick.

Cuts

Not many notables have missed multiple cuts, but a few names that have are Diaz, Tommy Gainey, Rafael Campos and Roger Sloan.

Fit & Form for PGA DFS

Now that we’ve covered both course history and recent form, let’s see if we can find any crossovers.

  • Schenk is the only golfer in the field to have made all his recent cuts and all his cuts at this course. I’d say that’s a pretty good fit and form.
  • Detry is another name that has a couple of top 10s in the last 11 weeks and one good start here, last year, where he finished in the 30s.
