DFS Golf Picks This Week & Expert Rankings for the Wells Fargo Championship 2022

The PGA Tour returns to TPC Potomac this week, the site of the 2017 and 2018 Quicken Loans events. Quail Hollow is the usual host for the Wells Fargo Championship but is taking a one-year hiatus, as it is hosting the President’s Cup this year. That means fans get another look at Potomac, which has played tough for professionals when it has seen competition over the last decade or so. TPC Potomac sets up as a mid-range par 70 at 7,160 yards but does require players to keep the ball in play and avoid the heavily tree-lined fairways and rough that guards its greens. Players who had success here in 2017 and 2018 were not necessarily big hitters but hit lots of fairways and were most importantly able to dial up their iron game and and greens in regulation. It will be important to keep the change of venue in mind when going forward with DFS golf research as well as when making fantasy golf picks this week for DraftKings and FanDuel PGA DFS contests.

The field this week gets a touch stronger as well with 16 of the OWGR top 50 in the field. Rory McIlroy is the headliner and is a fairly heavy favorite in the PGA betting picks world at +750 to +800 on many sites. As always, the Awesemo fantasy golf and betting tools will have you covered with how to approach this week. This article will go over some of the site’s favorite DFS golf picks and some potential GPP targets below.

DFS Golf Rankings & Expert Wells Fargo Championship 2022 Picks

TPC Potomac Stats and Info

  • Redesigned in 2006, 7,160 yards, par 70; host of Quicken Loans event in 2017 and 2018.
  • Greens: Bentgrass
  • Plays like a longer par 70 where hitting greens and fairways is varied due to tougher rough and tree-lined fairways.
  • Approach play was easily the most vital factor here in 2017 and 2018; nine of the top 11 players gained two strokes or more on approach, but most of the top 10 also had solid off-numbers as well.
  • Distance is not a huge factor, but players need to keep things straight and avoid getting too offline.

Wells Fargo Championship 2022 DFS Golf Picks & Fantasy Golf Rankings

Rory McIlroy: Grades: A+, Values: C, B

The last time Rory McIlroy played was at the Masters, where he made a 100-foot sand shot to vault him into a runner-up finish. McIlroy comes in as the overwhelming favorite this week and remains in solid overall form after yet another close call at Augusta. While his approach game has not quite spiked yet, the rest of his game has been great. He is not only gaining strokes off the tee every week, but he has also gained strokes around the greens in nine straight PGA Tour starts now.

This will be the first time McIlroy has played TPC Potomac in competition, but his ability to hit fairways while maintaining length is going to give him a huge advantage. He has traditionally done quite well on these shorter par 70 setups, grabbing wins at places like East Lake and Hamilton Country Club recently. As the overwhelming favorite, he is 12 points ahead of the next golfer in the Awesemo DFS Golf projections, and his DraftKings salary of $11,500 may help keep ownership levels down to 30% or below this week too.

Projected PGA DFS ownership: DraftKings: 28.6% | FanDuel: 44.8%

The Stats:

  • Has finished 14th or better in six of his last eight PGA Tour starts.
  • Ranks second in the field in strokes gained tee to green and fifth in bogey avoidance over the last 50 rounds.

Webb Simpson: Grades: A, Values: A, B

By all accounts, Webb Simpson is over the injury issues that plagued him at the start of the year, and for that reason, you can bet on him showing some solid form from a results perspective soon. He last played at the RBC Heritage, where he only managed a 59th, but has made the cut in three straight events and did gain strokes off the tee and on approach. Simpson’s putter, which is typically one of his best clubs, has let him down since returning but a small break could easily rectify that issue. It is wise to focus on the fact his iron game is getting sharper as well.

He grades out very well in the Awesemo DFS Golf projections this week with the highest points projection of any golfer under $8,500 on DraftKings for daily fantasy golf purposes and has very palatable ownership numbers at just 10%. The setup in 2018 at TPC Potomac favored shorter hitters who relied more on pinpoint accuracy over power and, long-term, that is Simpson’s best asset. Taking the discount on him before he pops for a big week and becomes $9,000 in these fields seems like a good idea this week.

Projected PGA DFS ownership: DraftKings: 10.8% | FanDuel: 10.5%

The Stats:

  • Has made the cut in three straight starts and gained strokes off the tee and on approach in his last outing.
  • Still ranks top 40 in birdie or better percentage and bogey avoidance for long term form.

Low-Owned Daily Fantasy Golf GPP Flier

David Lipsky ($7,500)

Lipsky was highlighted in the Awesemo Group betting article last week and he nearly paid off at big top-five odds, missing a 21-foot eagle putt on the last by inches. Regardless, the daily fantasy price on Lipsky this week remains very affordable and he looks to be rounding into very good form. He led the field in strokes gained on approach last week and displayed some impressive long iron play on the par 5’s. He also gained two eagles on the field for the week and just missed adding another.

The course this week will not have as many eagle opportunities, but it will require good iron play, as evidenced by the last two times it was seen on tour. Lipsky shares a lot of the same traits of the top 10 finishers at TPC Potomac in 2018 in that he is trending well with his irons and is not likely to get into much trouble off the tee. The setup seems perfect for him to keep pressing the advantage and he is trending with just around 5% ownership projections in the Awesemo DFS Golf projections this week.

Projected PGA DFS ownership: DraftKings: 4.9%

Top Two Under 5% in DraftKings Fantasy Golf This Week

This section will target players that should end up under or close to 5% ownership in larger DraftKings Golf GPPs. These picks are boom/bust PGA DFS players with an almost 100% focus on the upside.

Doc Redman ($7,000)

Redman has been showing some signs of life recently, gaining over 2.5 strokes on his approaches at the RBC Heritage and then grabbing a top-five placing at the Zurich team event. He is a great long to mid-iron player when he is in form and shot 64 in the final round at this event in 2018. He should have well under 5% ownership in larger fields.

Branden Grace ($7,100)

Grace’s iron game took fire at the RBC Heritage, gaining him 6.8 strokes for the week there. He has struggled around and on the greens of late but has shown the propensity over his career to flip a switch when it comes to putting and gaining in the short game. His off the tee and ball-striking have been very good of late so taking a shot on him this week seems prudent as a sub-3% GPP play.
