The First Cut: The Masters Guide & Player Preview at Augusta National PGA DFS Picks | 4/5/21

Tournament Winners (9)

This certainly seemed like the career resurgence year for past winners, as golfers like Stewart Cink, Brian Gay and a few more earned their first victory in some time. In doing so, they earned their first Masters birth in some time.

[DUSTIN]

  1. Matt Jones

    • Age & Birthplace: 40/Australia
    • How They Qualified: Winner of the 2021 Honda Classic
    • Recent Form:
      • 1
      • 55
      • MC
    • Masters Form:
      • 2014: MC
    • Statistical Profile:
      • Strokes Gained Tee to Green: 75
      • OWGR: 49
      • Driving Distance: 75
      • Driving Accuracy: 123
    • Bet of the Week:  +150 to miss the cut
    • Quick Notes: Jones has had a very nice year this year, dating all the way back to the Shriners Hospitals for Children last year. Since then, he’s made 13 of 14 cuts, including a win and two other top-10s. His first trip here back in 2014 didn’t go so well, but he comes in playing his best and at least has a few rounds played at Augusta.
  2. Martin Laird

    • Age & Birthplace: 38/Scotland
    • How They Qualified: Winning the 2021 Shriners Hospitals for Children Open
    • Recent Form:
      • 69
      • 43
      • MC
    • Masters Form:
      • 2013: MC
      • 2012:57
      • 2011: 20
    • Statistical Profile:
      • Strokes Gained Tee to Green: 76
      • OWGR: 97
      • Driving Distance: 76
      • Driving Accuracy: 60
    • Bet of the Week: + 105 to Miss the Cut
    • Quick Notes: It’s rare to see results get worse the more starts that one accumulates here, at least until they get of age where the game itself diminishes. But that’s what Laird has, whose best finish came all the way back in 2011, where he came 20th.
  3. Michael Thompson

    • Age & Birthplace: 35/USA
    • How They Qualified: Winner of the 3M Open.
    • Recent Form:
      • 19
      • 48
      • MC
    • Masters Form:
      • 2013: 25
    • Statistical Profile:
      • Strokes Gained Tee to Green: 129
      • OWGR: 99
      • Driving Distance: 129
      • Driving Accuracy: 41
    • Bet of the Week: +188 Top 40
    • Quick Notes: After a rather successful first time competing in the event in 2013, coming in 25th, Thompson has failed to make it back each of the last eight years. But that just makes it all the much sweeter.
  4. Brian Gay

    • How They Qualified: Winner of the 2020 Bermuda Championship
    • Recent Form:
      • 46
      • MC
      • MC
    • Masters Form:
    • Statistical Profile:
      • Strokes Gained Tee to Green: 195
        OWGR: 202
        Driving Distance: 195
        Driving Accuracy: 171
    • Bet of the Week: To Miss the Cut -225
    • Quick Notes: One of the most out-of-nowhere wins in Bermuda earned Gay his first trip back to Augusta since 2013, where he made the weekend and came in 38th. He hasn’t been playing all that well recently and typically relies on his short game to earn his keep.
  5. Hudson Swafford

    • How They Qualified: Winner of the Corales Championship
    • Recent Form:
      • 6
      • MC
      • MC
    • Masters Form:
      • 2017: MC
    • Statistical Profile:
    • Bet of the Week: To make the cut +150
    • Quick Notes: If Swafford doesn’t already own a property in the Dominican, he ought to, as his only two top-10s in the last couple of years happened there. A win back in November (which qualified him for this event) and then a sixth-place finish last week give him some confidence going into this week.
  6. Robert Streb

    • How They Qualified: Winner of the RSM Classic
    • Recent Form:
      • 13
      • MC
      • MC
    • Masters Form:
      • 2016: MC
      • 2015: MC
    • Statistical Profile:
      • Strokes Gained Tee to Green: 166
      • OWGR: 110
      • Driving Distance: 166
      • Driving Accuracy: 78
    • Bet of the Week: To miss the cut -167
    • Quick Notes: Streb is another one of those guys that has made career performances at one event, winning the RSM Classic for the second time. Streb has failed to get back to Augusta in each of the last four years and missed the cut the only two times he has.
  7. Jim Herman

    • How They Qualified: Winner of the 2020 Wyndham Championship
    • Recent Form:
      • 53
      • mc
      • mc
    • Masters Form:
      • 2016: MC
    • Statistical Profile:
      • Strokes Gained Tee to Green: 143
      • OWGR: 135
      • Driving Distance: 143
      • Driving Accuracy: 20
    • Bet of the Week: To miss the cut -250
    • Quick Notes: Hitting fairways is his M.O., as it’s really the only thing going for him. But Herman is a two-time winner now, as he was able to win the Wyndham Championship out of nowhere.
  8. Max Homa

    • How They Qualified: Winner of the 2020 Genesis Invitational
    • Recent Form:
      • 18
      • MC
      • 10
    • Masters Form:
      • 2020: Missed Cut
    • Statistical Profile:
      • Strokes Gained Tee to Green: 53
      • OWGR: 37
      • Driving Distance: 53
      • Driving Accuracy: 92
    • Bet of the Week: +125 Top 30
    • Quick Notes: Homa had a breakthrough win earlier this year at the Genesis Invitational. His first trip around Augusta didn’t go as planned, but that should help him this go around.
  9. Stewart Cink

    • How They Qualified: Winner of the 2020 Sanderson Farms
    • Recent Form:
      • 19
      • MC
      • MC
    • Masters Form:
      • 2019: Missed Cut.
    • Statistical Profile:
      • Strokes Gained Tee to Green: 53
      • OWGR: 37
      • Driving Distance: 53
      • Driving Accuracy: 92
    • Bet of the Week: -110 To miss the cut
    • Quick Notes: With his son on the bag, Cink has enjoyed a bit of a career resurgence this year. The play has earned him his second to trip to Augusta in the last three years. He missed the cut in 2019.
