PGA DFS Picks: The Top 3 SuperDraft Picks for WGC FedEx St. Jude Classic

Each week we’re diving into PGA DFS analysis and giving you some of the top PGA DFS picks for SuperDraft with the help of the world’s No. 1 DFS player, Alex “Awesemo” Baker, and his SuperDraft Projections (PREMIUM). What a difference a week makes. After trudging through a 3M Open field that was seriously starved for star power, this week’s WGC event is oozing with top-tier, world-class talent. Gone are the Adam Longs, Emiliano Grillos and Robby Sheltons of the world. In step the Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm and Justin Thomas ilks; though one major name is missing: Tiger Woods.

This week, we’re getting a cut-down field of 78 players and no cut, so everyone will have the coveted 6-of-6lineup. With the tournament field being comprised mostly of the world’s top players in OWGR, this week’s multipliers look a bit different, with only three players having multipliers greater than 1.25: C.T. Pan (1.30x), Lucas Horbert (1.35x) and Sebastian Soderberg (1.35x). We’re going with a bit of a different formula this week, baking in PGA odds a bit more, but still using Awesemo’s projections as the baseline. Here’s a quick glance behind the curtain at three of Awesemo’s best PGA picks to plug into your SuperDraft lineups for this week’s WGC-FedEx St. Jude Classic.

SuperDraft Picks | WGC FedEx St. Jude Classic

1) Justin Thomas (1.00x multiplier)

It’s not like I’m going to have to twist your arm to get you to play a guy like Justin Thomas. After all, he is the No. 3 player in the world. Since returning from hiatus, Thomas has missed just one cut — RBC Heritage — and notched four top 10s.

Many are hung up on the loss he took in the playoff at Workday, but I’d argue he was a bit unlucky not to get that win. It took an absolutely lights-out performance by Colin Morikawa — in a playoff, mind you — to take him down. Thomas is as consistent as they come, and on a week-to-week basis, he’s arguably the No. 1 player in the world. In fact, he’s No. 1 in strokes gained tee to green over the last 50 rounds. He’s a great play every week, and he’s even the best value in the PGA odds (+1,200) of the big four — McIlroy, Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau.

2) Patrick Reed (1.10x multiplier)

Reed comes in with a 1.10x multiplier this week, which is one of the largest ranges in the SuperDraft field. He doesn’t come into TPC Southwind with a ton of great form, but did manage a 10th at The Memorial. Though Reed isn’t coming in with white-hot irons, he gained .728 strokes (tied for 28th) tee to green. That is not bad at a tough Memorial tournament, so there’s at least some signs of life.

He’s consistently been one of the best putters on Tour, and with strokes gained putting seeming to be an important indicator for the WGC FedEx St. Jude Classic, the No. 9-ranked putter in strokes gained should be able to roll it well. Should he build on his decent off-tee performance at Muirfield, you can trust his flat stick to keep him in the hunt. In a no-cut event, it may take a little bit of pressure off his irons, and he may even pin hunt a bit more. After all, he’s the No. 8-ranked player in the world, and his PGA odds in the betting market are at +3,300 … it just seems like a good value all the way around.

3) Mackenzie Hughes (1.25 multiplier)

While we’re talking about scorching-hot putters, I’d be remiss to not mention Hughes. It seems at least once or twice a week the TV coverage cuts to Hughes draining another bomb from 50 feet out. Recent form favors Hughes after a pair of top-six finishes in his last three starts.

The Canadian picked up more than 0.5 strokes on the field tee to green in his last start out at The Memorial. He was a top-20 ball striker as well. It’s clear that he’s been hot of late, but he’s trending toward putting it all together. To win a tournament on SuperDraft, finding a guy who could get hot and has a multiplier that can boost you up the boards is important. With a top-10 Awesemo projection in multiplier, and his hot putter, Hughes could be the ticket.

SuperDraft PGA Picks Honorable Mentions

  • Sungjae Im (1.05x multiplier)
  • Billy Horschel (1.10x multiplier)
  • Gary Woodland (1.10 multiplier)
  • Max Homa (1.25x multipler)
