PGA DFS Picks: The Zurich Classic Round 3 Showdown Picks for DraftKings & FanDuel

This is a quick-hitter column to give you the key stats needed to make informed PGA DFS picks in your DraftKings and FanDuel daily fantasy golf lineups. In this space, I’ll give you a few recommendations for the third round of The Zurich Classic. For typical Showdown GPPs, DraftKings offers upwards of $50,000 to first place for second-and third-round tournaments, and sometimes even up to $100,000 for the final round. They also provide weekend-long contests that offer $25,000 to first place on average. FanDuel has even tried to get into the weekend-long and final-round contests, offering $10,000 and $5,000 to first place in their PGA DFS Showdown contests. Let’s take a look at PGA DFS picks for Round 3 of The Zurich Classic.

Round 3 PGA DFS Picks: The Zurich Classic

Previous Rounds Recap

As expected, predicting partner-play was difficult and resulted in only 1% of the lineups getting through the cut line. That’s just in the big GPP as well and is likely even lower in the single entry and higher dollar buy-ins. As expected, alternate shots provided a ton of variance. Crazy enough, though, a later birdie by team Sepp Straka and Josh Teater would move the cutline from -5 to -6, knocking out a ton of chalk with it.

Tony Finau and Cameron Champ have looked the most comfortable and find ways to lift each other up. The Norwegians, Viktor Hovland and Kristoffer Ventura, are showing that prior friendship and teammates can translate, as they put together two very quality rounds. Speaking of prior teammates playing well, Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose had a pair of good rounds, including the round of the day today in alternate shot, with a four-under 68. Other notables include Jason Kokrak and Pat Perez, the highest-owned team this week. They were able to make it through the cut easily and now have a chance to win over the weekend.

Other Notables

There are a few other teams playing that are playing well that we need to keep in focus for the weekend include Bubba Watson-Scottie Scheffler, Brendon Todd-Chris Kirk, as well as Graeme McDowell-Matt Wallace, who had a hole in one today. That came from McDowell, his first ever on the PGA Tour.

Quick-Hitter Stat Recap Through Round 2

Since we don’t have too many stats, let’s take a look at the team birdie leaders through two rounds.

  1. Hovland/Ventura (15)
  2. Champ/Finau, Stallings/Garnett, Stenson/Rose (14)
  3. Suh/Ghim (13)

The Zurich Classic PGA DFS Picks

It was a bit blustery today, especially in the afternoon, and those winds are expected to remain constant in Round 3. Gusts could even get up to 30MPH early in the day, and there could also be a passing thunderstorm. Temperatures are supposed to climb back into the 80s, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see a thunderstorm come along with it. Tomorrow’s format will be the best ball again before going back to alternate shot on Sunday.

PGA DFS Picks for Round 3 of The Zurich Classic

  • Tony Finau/Cameron Champ ($9,700): Sure, this duo is in first and playing well, but maybe people will be more apt to for the bigger names in Patrick Cantlay/Xander Schauffele and Jon Rahm/Ryan Palmer. It’s unlikely we get low ownership though, so keep that in mind, but they set up very well heading into the third round.
  • Brendon Todd/Chris Kirk ($8,900): If you are looking for two golfers that have a lot of similarities in their game, and likely never get the other one in trouble, it’s these two. While we don’t have to worry about it for tomorrow’s slate, I like these guys for the weekend-long slate as well. Since their games translate well to each other’s, alternate shot for them isn’t hard playing basically off of the same shot as typical.
  • Justin Suh/Doug Ghim ($7,500): At one point today, they had the lead all by themselves- by two strokes. It didn’t last long as a double on the 9th hole after making four straight birdies derailed their round but still in fine shape. A Top-10 finish would get Suh another start at next week’s event. Of course, a win would do so much more. Let’s see if we can get these guys hot tomorrow early and move up the leaderboard.

Sneaky PGA DFS Pick for Round 3

  • Michael Gligic/Vincent Whaley ($6,600): It has been a bit of a breakout year for Gligic, who almost won the Dominican Republic event. He came up just a bit short, but he’s still a big-time finisher as a second-year PGA Tour Pro. Whaley has endured a good season as well, having made five straight cuts. Match the two together, and it looks to be a formidable team that can feed of each other’s solid play over the weekend.

DraftKings and FanDuel Fill-Ins for Zurich Classic

  • Kyle Stanley/K.H. Lee ($7,500)
  • Brandt Snedker/Keith Mitchell ($7,300)
