The second round of the Valero Texas Open is just about finished or is finished, and golfers are positioning for a last-second invite to next week’s Masters Tournament. As of right now, only the leader Ryan Palmer and Gary Woodland are the only ones scheduled to tee it up next week that are currently in the top 5. PGA DFS contests also roll on with different slates starting tomorrow and plenty of chances to build the bankroll for next week.

Round 2 Recap

Morning Wave

It didn’t take a meteorologist to see that there’d be an edge for this morning wave, not only soft greens but also lower wind than the afternoon. J.J. Spaun would get it going and push it to double digits but wouldn’t close well and would finish at -8. Kevin Chappell would be the highlight of the wave; however, playing on past champions status, and a week after his best finish on tour this year, he shot a seven-under 65, the round of the day. Lucas Glover and Brandt Snedeker keep up the veteran status by playing well in round two, shooting 66, on the day joined by texas Beau Hossler, Lanto Griffin and Sahith Theegala, all shooting that score from this wave.

Other notable rounds from this wave include Jordan Spieth, who had it rolling early, getting it to four under for the day, but a three-putt from 3 feet cost him two strokes, finishing at -2. Corey Conners would also struggle to get things going shooting a one-under 71 in round two.

Afternoon Wave

The wind would pick up just as the afternoon wave started, and overnight leader Rusell Knox would get out nicely early. But the wind would catch up with him and he needed up shooting well over par. Still searching for his first win in Texas, Ryan Palmer would wither the wind better than most shooting a wave best 66 in the afternoon. As would Dylan Frittelli, who used a thru the bag approach to shooting his best score in some time. Gary Woodland continues his fine form, in position again, his third time in the last couple of months.

A few other notable rounds from this wave were Robert MacIntyre, who shot his second straight 69 and Jhonttan Vegas, who shot four-under 69.

Tail Awesemo's Sports Betting Picks Today!

Jhonttan Vegas ($8,700): All year Vegas has looked superb off the tee, definitely of winning caliber, but the other attributes haven’t followed. He’s gaining momentum. However, he’s gaining over seven strokes tee to green in the first two rounds. Now, he just needs his putter to wake up and he could be the one heading to Augusta with the last invitation handed out.

Maverick McNealy ($9,500): A poor finish to round two, as McNealy had it to five under at one point, but his putter deserted him on the last nine holes. Still, he looks as solid as ever tee to green and is primed for a Saturday charge on moving day.

Robert MacIntyre ($7,700): A certain level of safety here as MacInyntre is at a value price, but playing in all four strokes gained categories. He needs to hit a few more fairways, though over the weekend if he wants to get into the top 5 or better, but a big start for Bobby, who is looking to go into next week in similar top form like he did last year.

Deep Shots:

  • Anriban Lahiri ($7,400)
  • Jared Wolfe ($6,000)
  • Matthias Schwab ($7,300)
  • Richard Bland ($7,300)
