PGA DraftKings DFS Showdown Picks: The Tour Championship

Previous Round Recap

After an abysmal opening round for Hideki Matsuyama, he’d be the first person on the course today and shot one of the day’s best scores — a 65. Only Jon Rahm would tie that but still couldn’t catch Patrick Cantlay, who shot a solid round of his own — four under 66 — and continues to play well. Justin Thomas got the closest to the top 2, at one point sitting at 12-under and just two back. He’d get it to 5-under for the day, and just one back after a birdie on Hole 14. However, three awful drives on his inward three holes led to two bogies, and a par on the par 5 18th after missing a five-footer to end his day. Jordan Spieth would have a very similar fate, getting to 9-under for the tournament and 4-under for his round through 12 holes, but a bogies on 13 and 16 would derail his chances. Rory McIlroy got off to a rough start on Friday but bounced back with a six-birdie 30 inward nine, and has himself within striking distance with two very low rounds the next two days.

Notables

Bryson DeChambeau would hold it together for most of the round but bogeyed both the 13th and the 14th holes before making birdie on his final two holes to shoot 67. He’s the closest to Rahm and Cantlay, who seem leaps and bounds above this field right now. Tony Finau had a solid bounce-back round, shooting 67 after an opening-round 72. Kevin Na, Viktor Hovland and Cameron Smith all had their second straight solid day and are in the top 5 heading into the weekend.

PGA DFS DraftKings Showdown Picks

Nailing three of the six optimal picks in the article yesterday, as well as leaving plenty of salary to Rahm, giving four of the six optimal, one would have thought it would have been a breeze to the cash line. But it wasn’t as Conners and Koepka were massive disappointments, neither scoring over 30 points. With so few golfers in the field this week, two misses did not make up for the four correct plays.

  • Rory McIlroy ($8,700) The only thing waiting for a breakthrough in McIlroy’s game was his irons, and we got that in Round 2. His putter went a bit cold on him, which kept him from going real low today. But the real low one seems to be in there with the big breakthrough in the iron play today. Maybe it’ll come on Saturday and get himself back into this golf tournament.
  • Jordan Spieth ($7,800) If DraftKings wants to continue to price him down, and he continues to play well, my hand is forced. He leads the field in the birdies through two rounds, but just can’t seem to sustain a run. Friday, he had a run of three birdies and was staring at four in a row with an 11-footer on 13, but he would three-putt from there. Turn that into a make, and who knows how low he could have gone? He’s also in the top 5 in strokes gained off the tee this week, so that’s not a concern. Now, we just need his strong straits to fully shine through and he should be back in the mix for the top score in Round 3.
  • Jason Kokrak ($6,500) Quietly, Kokrak is just hanging around in this tournament, hitting just about 80% of his greens through two rounds. Before the tournament, the data suggested that if Kokrak could hit 80% or more of his greens this week, he’d be in the mix for a top-10 or even top-5 with a good putting week. We haven’t gotten the hot putter yet, but it seems to be lurking, gaining mildly in Round 1 and losing a bit in Round 2. If that flips tomorrow and he’s able to hit, say, 15 of his greens, he’ll be one of the best values on the board upon day’s end.

Sneaky DraftKings Pick for the Tour Championship Round 3 Showdown

  • Patrick Reed ($6,100) A wild and crazy week to get here and just be eligible to play. After thinking he could die earlier on in the week, Reed hasn’t been able to find his ball-striking in the first two rounds. But, it got better in Round 2, only losing 1.3 strokes ball-striking, as opposed to the 4.1 he lost in Round 1. If that continues to get better, his short game will be there, and he could put up a score somewhere in the mid-60s. At $6,100, he’ll be a big piece of the lineup.
