PGA DFS Picks: DraftKings Showdown Travelers Championship Round 3

A True New England day on Friday, temperatures started out in the low 60s in the morning. A light rain was steady for about an hour or two during the round, making it much harder on the morning golfers. By the time the afternoon wave stepped on the course, it was bright and sunny and in the high 70s. The light rain in the morning softened up the greens tremendously, and scoring remained good on the day.

Morning Wave

The morning rain and heavy air certainly affected play here, but even so, Brooks Koepka looked like a man on a mission until the par-5 13th when he hooked one out of bounds. He recovered, though, and go on a tear from there, including a hole-out eagle on 18. He stumbled on his inward nine, however, and posted a 3-under 67 on the day. Kevin Kisner gave some indication that the scoring would pick up throughout the day, as he got it to 8 under at one point, but a bogey on 18 had him settle in for 7-under 63, the best score he has had in quite some time. He, Russell Henley and Monday qualifier Seamus Power wound up in the top 10 after today’s round.

Notables

Dustin Johnson and Phil Mickelson put on a show late in their round. With their backs up against the wall, they needed to birdie three of the last four. They both did so and will have a chance to make a big move Saturday morning because of it. Paul Casey has battled back issues all week, but he said it’s an annoyance rather than a serious issue.

Afternoon Wave

When the sun started to break through the clouds at around 12:30, the mood on the course changed. It was full-on attack mode for most of these golfers in the afternoon wave, as Justin Rose and Kyoung Hoon Lee got off to incredibly hot starts. Both were 7 under through 10 holes but ended up finishing the day at that number. The round of the day was shot by Jason Day, whose back problem didn’t stop him from turning in an 8-under 62 on the day and taking a one-shot lead.

Notables

All of the stars from this wave made a move today, including Patrick Cantlay and Scottie Scheffler, both getting to 6 under for the tournament. Bryson DeChambeau turned in a 66 of his own and is just four shots out of the lead. One of the last golfers on the course on Friday afternoon, Guido Migliozzi, shot a 5-under 65 on the day and is in a position to make a big move and possibly earn a tour card in just two starts.

Travelers Championship PGA DFS Picks

Typically this course yields better scores in the morning wave, and it just so happens there is a plethora of golfers to choose from that posted that number. In addition, there is some expected wind to roll in tomorrow afternoon, giving even more credence to stacking some of the golfers that are apt for a move on Saturday.

PGA DFS Picks for Round 2 of Travelers Championship

Dustin Johnson ($10,400): Sometimes the obvious plays are just that. With plenty of cheaper options, it’s easy to fit Johnson in. He will be going out as one of the first four groups of the day and only sits 7 back of the lead. His driver has been but found a really good rhythm the last five holes or so. If that momentum carries into tomorrow, and his putter wakes up with it, Johnson will be in tied for the lead before Jason Day tees off.
Abraham Ancer ($8,400): The chalk of the week was always destined to make the cut, and he did so in dramatic fashion, sinking a 10-footer on 18 to slide into the weekend. Ancer’s putter hasn’t really been the problem; it was just a horrid ball-striking day in Round 1, as he could get absolutely nothing going early in the morning Thursday. Hopefully, those cobwebs have been dusted off, and Ancer can join Johnson in making a big move up the board tomorrow.
Mackenzie Hughes ($7,300): If there’s a shortlist of golfers that one would want to make a 15-foot putt, Hughes would be on it. He needed to do so this week. His life didn’t depend on it, but whether he got paid this week or not did, and he was able to make the weekend by sinking a 20-footer on 18. Having played so well last week before succumbing to a few unfortunate breaks, Hughes struggled today but was able to do enough to get through the cut. Now, if he can regain his from Round 1, where he gained a combined three strokes with his putter and approach game, he will be right back in this thing.

Sneaky Pick for the Round 2 Showdown

Will Gordon ($6,700): It’s 2-for-2 at the Travelers for Gordon, who has his best finish on the PGA Tour on this course. Last year he was a bit closer to the leaderboard than he is now, but with it being so condensed, a 65 tomorrow should put him in the running for two straight top-10s. Plus, Gordon is always a great Showdown target when he gets to the weekend, as his aggressive style leads to plenty of birdie looks. Consequently, it can lead to higher numbers, but if he can avoid the doubles or worse, he’ll be in contention.
