PGA DraftKings DFS Showdown Picks: The Tour Championship

Previous Round Recap

Although there are some terrible rounds out there, by in large, East Lake is playing on the easier side this year. With only Joaquin Niemann over par, it has provided plenty of opportunities to move up the leaderboard. That’s if Patrick Cantlay would ever let up, but he hasn’t, adding his third-straight mid-60 score. His 67 on Saturday would again prove to be too much for the rest of the pack to catch him, leaving most of the field in the dust. Only Jon Rahm is within two, and only Justin Thomas comes within five. Given that the tournament low this week is a 65, shot by both Thomas and Abraham Ancer on Saturday, Cantlay would have to shoot even par, or worse, for Thomas to have a shot at winning.

Notables

Louis Oosthuizen would jump out to a three-under through four days and sat at -11, and some thought he’d make a run. But, he played his last 12 holes at four-over and finished at +1 for the day. Jordan Spieth would have a similar run, starting his day going two-under through 8, but no birdies in his last 11 holes would stall his tournament. In round three, the last major thing to note was Brooks Koepka withdrawing after hitting a tree root on his approach shot on the 10th hole. It is quite possibly the most important thing to happen in this Tour Championship as it puts his Ryder Cup participation in doubt.

PGA DFS DraftKings Showdown Picks

Nailing three of the six optimal picks in the article yesterday, as well as leaving plenty of salary to Rahm, giving four of the six optimal, one would have thought it would have been a breeze to the cash line. But it wasn’t as Conners and Koepka were massive disappointments, neither scoring over 30 points. With so few golfers in the field this week, two misses did not make up for the four correct plays.

  • Viktor Hovland ($9,400) Leading the field in strokes gained tee to green, Hovland is one of the few golfers that needed to hit 80% of his greens this week to contend. And while he’s not contending, he’s still in for possibly the biggest payday of his life if he can get himself into the top five tomorrow. Sitting just a few shots back of that mark, Hovland needs to catch fire with the flat stick for the final round and his ball-striking should carry him to the finish line. The good thing is that his around the green work isn’t that bad this week, slightly beating the average. It’s his putter, losing three strokes over the three rounds. One good round on Sunday will be all we need to pay off a nice pivot off of the top two golfers.
  • Abraham Ancer ($7,300) One of the rounds of the day today, shooting 65, Ancer had one of the best putting days of his career. He gained over four strokes on Saturday, moving him into position for a huge payday. His ball-striking has been very good lately, but not this week, slightly losing off the tee and slightly gaining on his approaches. If that wakes up tomorrow and the putter stays hot, he should easily be able to stay in the top five and earn himself a hefty paycheck in the process.
  • Patrick Reed ($6,000) Out of the sneaky slot because he’s unlikely to be that sneaky in the final round. After his best day on the course, gaining throughout his back and shooting a four-under 66, Reed looks to make one more strong push to get himself onto the Ryder Cup Team. Entering the third round, he had lost significantly with his ball-striking, but as the article suggested last night, it couldn’t get worse. He gained 1.69 strokes with his approaches and added another .14 off the tee for his best ball-striking day in a while. I look for that to continue in the final round and work his way up to the top half of the leaderboard come day’s end.

Sneaky DraftKings Pick for the Tour Championship Round 4 Showdown

  • Sam Burns ($6,900) Some may have forgotten that Burns was even in the tournament, as he’s done absolutely nothing all week. Nothing with any of his clubs that he uses while not on the green, at least, losing strokes everywhere, except for putting. He’s lost on average 2.33 strokes tee to green in three rounds, and for that reason, is likely going to be passed over by many gamers. But Burns has been in great form over the last month, and if that shows up even a little tomorrow, he could jolt up the leaderboard with how good he’s putting.
