Round 3 CJ Cup Showdown PGA DFS Picks for DraftKings & FanDuel Lineups | Saturday, 10/16/21

Keith Mitchell looked unstoppable in Round 2 of the CJ Cup on Friday, and if you had him in any of your daily fantasy golf lineups, they likely went to the top of the leaderboard like he did. Let’s look ahead to tomorrow’s Round 3 where DraftKings is offering $20,000 to first place. Let’s break down Round 1 and go over some DFS golf advice for making our PGA DFS picks and building our showdown lineups for Friday’s second round.

PGA DFS Showdown Picks: CJ Cup Round 3

Round 2 Recap

Mitchell wouldn’t waste any time catching Robert Streb, birdieing his first hole, and eagling the third. He’d shot 64 on the day — one of the first times that someone has backed up a 10-under round with another round under 65. He holds a commanding five-shot lead. Those who sit five back are Seongheyon Kim, looking to make a mark over here on the PGA Tour, the ever-lovable Harry Higgs and Jordan Spieth. Spieth’s seven-under 65, puts him in a position to make a run at a win here in Vegas. Nobody, however, would play as good as Mackenzie Hughes did, shooting a 10-under 62 on Day 2, and vaulted him up 49 spots on the leaderboard. Tyrell Hatton, who was celebrating his birthday yesterday, wouldn’t show any signs of too much partying, shooting 65 on the day continuing is form from the European Tour, where he finished second in his last event, and sits just six back of Mitchell.

Notables:

Dustin Johnson would finally make a few putts, albeit the first one he made today was a tap-in eagle, flipping out for albatross. If you came to see an albatross, well, you would have thought Johnson’s was the only chance, but no, Abraham Ancer hit a massive 3 wood from 260 yards out that tracked directly into the hole. That propelled him to an eight-under 64 on the day. Other stars like Justin Thomas and Rory McIlroy would make small moves on the day but still sit well behind Mitchell. Adam Scott would end his day with seven straight 3s, including two eagles and burst up the leaderboard, and sits within striking distance at five back.

PGA DFS DraftKings Showdown Picks

It sure seems that the golfers teeing off in the morning will have the easier set of conditions as the wind is expected to be blowing at an average rate of 20 miles per hour all afternoon.

  • Cameron Smith ($9,000): It has been a blended approach for Smith over the first two days, struggling with his putter in Round 1, but gaining strokes everywhere else, while losing in all three strokes gained tee-to-green facets, but gained over two with the putter. One round over the weekend should yield all of the start combining for a good round, and he’ll be a pivotal piece for showdown lineups when it happens.
  • Patrick Reed ($7,300): Very similar to Smith, Reed had an awful putting day on Thursday losing almost four strokes, but gained elsewhere through his bag. But, that flipped in Round 2, gaining almost 4.5 with his putter, but losing almost two tee to green. Given Reed’s propensity to move up throughout the weekend, today might have been the spark he’s been searching for. If it is, he’s mispriced for the third-round slate.
  • Erik van Rooyen ($7,200): After a letdown week last week, or really let down Thursday, van Rooyen was a good bounce-back candidate this week. Not having to move far, and a few days to work on his game, it has proved to be the right medicine for this week. He has gained over two strokes with each the putter and approach game, just waiting for the big stick to warm up. Solid value for a recent winner that’s playing with a ton of confidence.
  • Cam Davis ($7,000): If Davis would have putted last week like he is this week, he might have a good chance at a top 5. That’s flipped here through two rounds, losing almost four strokes tee to green, and gaining just more than that with his putter. His tee-to-green game looked great last week, so maybe just a few bad swings for Davis. But, only six back of second place, Davis can climb the leaderboard in a hurry with a low one tomorrow, and should have an ideal tee time sometime in the mid-morning.
