PGA DFS & Fantasy Golf Preview for the Mexico Open 2022

Jason Rouslin

There is a new tournament and new course for the first time all season. Replacing the WGC Mexico, Grupo Salinas has stepped up and will sponsor the Mexico Open 2022, a full-field event held in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. This extraordinary resort set on the Riviera Maya has three different courses. The host this week will be the most inland one, the Norman Signature Course at Vidanta. One hundred forty-four players will compete this week at the par-73 layout, one of the few on tour. Or the PGA Tour may elect to play the shortest par 5 from one of the forward tees and play it as a par 4. There are six on the scorecard, which would be one of the only courses on tour to have that. If it stays that way, or even with five par 5’s and a par 72, winning scores will be very low this week. We’ll have more concrete information available later in the week. Let’s learn more about the course and set the stage for the first playing of the Mexico Open 2022 at Vidanta so we can dominate our PGA DFS contests this week on DraftKings and FanDuel.

PGA DFS Golf Rankings, Stats & Predicted Scoring

While there is no any history here for the event, it is still possible to predict the type of scoring this week. Also, it is unclear what the exact setup will be, but with at least five par 5’s and a drivable par 4, scoring will be distributed evenly among those six holes, with not a ton of scoring happening outside of them.

*Note this has been updated to reflect the course set-up this week, in which the PGA Tour will play it as a Par 71, converting the two shortest par 5s, into long par 4s.

Mexico Open 2022 PGA DFS Player Preview

There are plenty of Mexican-born players in the field this week, so the local fans will have plenty to root for. Abraham Ancer is the lowest-ranked in the field, ranking 18th in the world. He’ll be joined by Jon Rahm, who is the No. 2 golfer in the world right now and has for the most part struggled to find his top-end form this year. Since the Waste Management in February, he hasn’t had a top-10 in a stroke-play event and hasn’t had a top-five since the Farmers Open in January. Only four others that are currently ranked inside the top 50 in the world are teeing it up this week: Tony Finau, Kevin Na and Patrick Reed. Others that have been playing well this season and will be looking to make it better with a win include Gary Woodland, Aaron Wise and Cameron Tringale.

While Rahm’s top-end form hasn’t been there, he at least hasn’t missed any cuts and has come in the top 10 twice over the last 12 weeks in six starts. He is one of only a small few with at least three starts that have made all their cuts over these last 12 weeks. In fact, he’s the only one that has made at least four starts on the PGA Tour and made the cut in all of them. Others like Scott Gutschewski, Patrick Flavin and Robert Garrigus have some Korn Ferry Tour starts mixed in. Golfers that have played the weekend all but once in the last 12 weeks and have at least five starts are Mark Hubbard, Russell Knox, Peter Uihlein, Daniel Berger, Greyson Sigg, Curtis Thompson, John Huh and Vaughn Taylor.

Switching focus to top-end form, Chad Ramey and Gary Woodland are the only two golfers in the field that have multiple top-five finishes over the last 12 weeks. Ramey had a win at an alternate-field event down in the Dominican Republic, while Woodland has been close a few times. Ancer has found the top 10 twice but has been more volatile than typical. Other golfers able to find the top 10 twice over the past 12 weeks include Sahith Theegala, Chris Kirk, Callum Tarren and Brian Stuard.
