PGA DFS: Showdown Spotlight for the Northern Trust Round 3 l Play for $50K

This column is a quick-hitter article to give you the stats you need to make informed PGA DFS picks for your DraftKings + FanDuel daily fantasy lineups and give you a couple of recommendations for The Northern Trust. On a typical showdown contest, DraftKings will offer upwards of $50,000 to first for rounds 2 and 3 showdown and sometimes up to $100,000 for the final-round contests. They also provide weekend-long contests that have been offering $25,000 to first for most weekends. Lastly, FanDuel has also tried to get into the weekend-long and final round contests, offering $10,000 and $5,000 to first.

Previous Round Commentary

TPC Boston proved to be absolutely no test for the best in the world today, as we saw the elusive 59 score almost shot twice! Incredible. Scottie Scheffler went on an absolute tear, getting it done with 12 birdies and no bogeys, while Dustin Johnson was eleven under thru eleven, but played the last seven holes at even par. Not to take anything away from  Cameron Davis, who played his second solid round in a row, firing on all cylinders and sits just two back of DJ.

There were a couple of blowup rounds, keeping the scoring average a little bit higher than it was on Thursday, but that’s more due to the golfer knowing his season was over, and “mailing it in.” The course conditions are allowing this high scoring, and much of the same is expected over the weekend. For the first time in quite a while, there was an under-par cut, and not just -1, but -3! A testament to how the course is playing.

Strokes Gained Differential

Corey Conners and Webb Simpson both really struggled tee to green in round one, but they followed each other in round two, both gaining almost four, after losing 1.8 in round one. Scheffler, Kim, & Kevin Na are the top five golfers who improved their ball striking round over round. Good to see J.T. Poston find a little bit of form in round two. We know how good of a putter he is.

Strokes Gained Ball Striking vs. Putting

Kevin Streelman’s putting got worse in round two, but his ball-striking remained good. That could be a good sign of things to come this weekend. He still leads this category and the only golfer with a four-shot differential. Brian Harman, who was better today, and his ball-striking remained good, hence the move up the leaderboard. Rory McIlroy, Keegan Bradley and Matthew Wolff round out the top five.

Top 10 Breakdown and PGA DFS Picks

Russell Henley continues his run of form, as does Harris English and Kevin Kisner. All three coming off of good performances down in North Carolina at Sedgefield have translated that game and find themselves in the top 10 heading into the weekend. Matthew Wolff, Louis Oosthuizen, Si Woo Ki, and Daniel Berger also kept pace or at least tried to keep DJ & Scheffler within reach.

Russell Henley ($7,100)

Back when Chris Kirk won this even in 2014, Henley was right there the whole way, so being in contention over the weekend won’t be too much of a concern for him. He’s been steady each of the first two rounds gaining over three strokes tee to green in each of the first two rounds and likely won’t be too highly owned with no finishing points being assigned quite yet. Hard not to like Kim, Wolff and Oosthuizen as well.

Stud or Value Pick Outside of Top-10

Jon Rahm ($9,600)

A very poor round in round 1 with his irons, losing almost three on the day, he bounced back to the tune of gaining a stroke and a quarter on Friday and has momentum heading into the weekend. I sense he’ll be on the lower owned side, certainly lower than Johnson, Scheffler, Thomas and Berger, so I think that may be a good spot to pick up some ownership variance.

Sneaky PGA DFS Pick Outside of Top-10

Keegan Bradley ($6,600)

The New England native has been shown up lately by the other native in the field, Richy Werenski, but now has equaled him through two rounds. Bradley has gotten it done tee to green, gaining almost two in both rounds, coming just shy in round two. His iron play has been a big help to that, gaining over 1.5 in each of the first two rounds.

Lineup Fill-Ins

Adam Long ($6,500)

Ian Poulter ($7,300)

Bubba Watson ($7,400)

Keith Mitchell ($6,200)
