PGA DFS: Showdown Spotlight Picks for DraftKings and FanDuel | 3M Open Round 3

While the rain stayed away, the wind picked up in Round 2, and the cut would not budge from -2 almost all day. Some big names were hanging around that number for most of Friday, including Dustin Johnson, who needed a birdie on one of his last two holes to make the weekend. However, a water ball off the tee on the 18th would seal his fate, and the No.1 player would miss the cut. Ouch. A few other big names are still in it, though, as Tony Finau will look to make a major move on Saturday.

PGA DFS Showdown Picks: 3M Open Round 3

Previous Round Recap

Morning Wave

A few different golfers would get to double-digit under par from this wave, including Jhonattan Vegas, Bo Hoag and Chez Reavie. None of them, however, would finish there as they all fell out and finished at -9. Brian Stuard had the round of the morning with a seven-under 65, as he would be the only one to get to that number on the day. Most notably, the season of #KANG has begun, as Sung Kang shot 65 this morning and had one of the best scores of the day.

Notables

Matthew Wolff had an exceptional Round 2, shooting his second consecutive 69 and is easily moving onto the weekend. J.T. Poston would continue his good form as well, shooting five-under 66 on Friday and is in the mix again for the second straight week. Patrick Reed squeaked through the cut with back-to-back 70s.

Afternoon Wave

Johnson would be the only one of the big names to miss out on the weekend from this wave as Tony Finau, Sergio Garcia, Louis Oosthuizen, Rickie Fowler and Bubba Watson would all find a way to play the weekend. Adam Hadwin would find his form in Round 2 as well, backing up a solid four-under in Round 1, with a six-under 65 in Round 2. He’d be the only golfer to post at -10 until Ryan Armour, my sneaky pick for Round 2, went out and shot a bogey-free six-under 65. Not bad for a guy that costs $6800 and was just under 5% owned, don’t you think?

Awesemo's Top Golfer Tool is an Ace Since golf performances are largely uncorrelated between one golfer and the next, aside from weather impacts, a good way to view a PGA DFS lineup is as a parlay, where you have to hit all 6 picks to hit. The Awesemo Top Golfer Tool gives you the probabilities that each golfer will finish top 6, as well as their 25%, 50%,and 75% results as a benchmark for how you can expect each golfer to perform at the tournament.

The 3M Open PGA DFS Picks

An overnight storm will bring more rain to the area tomorrow and should soften the course even more for round three. No adverse weather conditions are expected past 4 am tomorrow.

PGA DFS Picks for Round 3 of the 3M Open

  • Sergio Garcia ($9,200) It was a very rough start to his second round. Garcia played the first five holes at three strokes over par. Although, he bounced back with very solid ball-striking and wound up making the cut on the number. Garcia’s putter has been so bad this week, and I’m not sure it can get any worse. If we catch his good day, Garcia can certainly match the field with the putter.
  • Gary Woodland ($7,400) Sandwiched between some less-talented, but chalkier golfers, Woodland could end up being an intuitive play. Even though the ball-striking has been non-existent over the first two days, it has been the short game doing all the work. Woodland was able to gain over 5.75 total strokes in the first two rounds, and he’ll look to keep that part of his game working.
  • Cameron Champ ($7,300) The putting woes are well documented for Champ. However, it looks like things are finally clicking after two round, and it’s clearly bringing out the confidence. Champ has now made his second straight weekend, and he’s got a great chance to win this whole thing. I want to jump on the opportunity to get Champ’s best day tomorrow.

Sneaky Pick for the Round 3 Showdown

  • Scott Brown ($6,600) Gaining well over two strokes with his irons in each of the first two rounds, Brown certainly looks to be in a good spot with his game. Brown’s form has been solid of late, including the T4 finish at the John Deere Classic. We can see that he’s not unfamiliar with playing near the top of the leaderboard. That T4 was sparked by a Saturday 63, something I’d love to see repeat itself tomorrow.
