PGA DFS: Showdown Spotlight Picks for DraftKings and FanDuel | John Deere Classic Round 3

It was clear from the start that three-under through two rounds would not be enough to play the weekend. Adam Schenk, who was one of the first golfers on the course today, shot 30 five straight birdies on the front nine. In all, 65 golfers would make the weekend. A few big names would miss the cut, with most of them making it. However, with -13 leading the way heading into Saturday, -20 or better will likely be the winner this week.

Previous Round Recap

Morning Wave

Schenk’s morning wouldn’t even be the highlight of the wave. However, as Maverick McNealy had a stretch of golf that included three birdies and a hole in one. That sparked him to a seven-under 64, tieing Schenk for the second-lowest score of the morning. John Senden who shot 74 in Round 1, would find something overnight and fired a 63, getting him through to the weekend. Brandon Hagy would also continue his run of good form in round two, tieing McNealy and Schenk with a 64.

Notables

Russell Henley is a three-putt from three feet away, from being in second place and bogey-free thru 36. His second-round included five birdies and no bogeys. He’s in a prime chasing spot over the weekend. Overnight leaders Sebastian Munoz and Chesson Hadley would both play well but not great, Munoz shooting 67, bogey-free, and Hadley 68. Tournament favorite Daniel Berger will need to find some magic over the weekend, shooting a three-under 68 in round two. That after an opening round 69.

Afternoon Wave

With -12 being the number to catch, a few golfers had a good chance at catching it. One golfer we didn’t’ think would be that person is Luke List, who had his best round maybe all year. He went out and took the lead into the weekend by one stroke with a stellar eight-under 63, following a five-under 66. He wouldn’t be the only golfer to shoot eight under from the afternoon wave. In fact, there would be two others, with Lucas Glover & Chase Seiffert also rocketing up the leaderboard on Friday with great rounds. Aaron Wise also found some form on Friday, much to the delight of his backers going out and shooting seven-under 64, and that’s with a miss from two feet, so he should have been with those other at 63. Still, List will head into the weekend with a one-shot lead over a whole slew of chasers as 18 golfers are within four of the lead.

John Deere Classic PGA DFS Picks

Conditions aren’t supposed to be all that different over the weekend, maybe a bit more wind than the first few days, but with the course yielding so many birdies looks, not even wind will be able to hold these golfers back from a good score.

PGA DFS Picks for Round 3 of The John Deere Classic

  • Ryan Moore ($8,400)  The golden ticket to success here at the John Deere Classic is the find fairways and get hot with the irons and putter. That’s exactly what Moore has given us thru two rounds, gaining over four strokes with the irons and over 2.6 strokes with the putter. Given that he’s still reasonably priced, and is likely to be much more expensive in the final round slate, let’s try and catch a hot Saturday on the course with Moore.
  • Aaron Wise($7,900): Starting the week at $9,200, Wise opened with an abysmal 72 in Round 1, and no one wanted to play him on Friday. Well, he busted out Friday to a seven-under 64, and now his price is back down in the value section, a perfect time to buy. He’s actually averaging positive strokes gained in all four facets of the game through two rounds, showing us that he could get back in this thing if everything clicks on Saturday.
  • Patrick Rodgers($7,400) Leading the field in strokes gained off the tee Patrick is using the Dylan Frittelli approach of last year, gaining strokes with his tee ball, with the putter while losing on the approach.

Sneaky Pick for the Round 3 Showdown

  • Nick Taylor ($6,500) Quietly, Taylor moved up the leaderboard today, and then when he got to 17, landed the big bird to jump him up to the first page. He’s been reliant on his putter through two rounds, gaining over six strokes. But that confidence reverberated through his entire bag today, gaining strokes in all four facets of his game. At $6,500, he presents really nice salary flexibility if you do want to roster Daniel Berger or Sungjae Im.
