PGA DFS: Showdown Spotlight Picks for DraftKings and FanDuel | Round 2 of The Wells Fargo Championship

Now that it’s Round 2 of The Wells Fargo Championship, that means it’s time to play some Showdown contests. In case you are new to the format, typical Showdown GPPs on DraftKings offer upwards of $50,000 to first place for second-and third-round tournaments, and sometimes even up to $100,000 for the final round. They also provide weekend-long contests that offer $15,000 to first place on average. Let’s take a look at PGA DFS picks for Round 2 of The Wells Fargo Championship.

Round 2 PGA DFS Picks: The Wells Fargo Championship

Previous Round Recap

Morning Wave

The intense storms in the Charlotte area surprisingly gave perfect conditions for the greenskeeper to provide a pristine surface. The greens have been immaculate, usually yielding to some of the best putters in the game. Plenty of ball strikers took advantage on the first day, setting themselves up nice for the rest of the weekend. This wave (the early-late wave) is said to have the tougher of the conditions now on both days. However, that didn’t stop K.H. Lee from shooting the wave’s best score at 66, while Peter Malnati was the only other one from the wave to shoot better than 3 under.

The stars from this wave really struggled to get going, with Sungjae Im coming out on top with a 68. Justin Thomas and Viktor Hovland were able to get in at 2 under and sit 5 back of the first-round leader.

Afternoon Wave

That leader was no one other than 50-year-old Phil Mickelson, who had his best round in over two years on tour, shooting an opening-round 64. The afternoon wave provided plenty of other good scores and will also see an easier set of conditions tomorrow morning. One of those golfers going out tomorrow morning is Tommy Fleetwood, who finally kept it together for the entire first round and continues his strong play from the second round at The RBC Heritage a few weeks back.

Two golfers that have been out of form lately, Gary Woodland and Luke List, both found something here at the difficult Quail Hollow, shooting first-round 67s. Woodland continued his strong ball striking seen last Friday at The Valspar Championship, while List gained over two strokes putting. Any time he does that, he typically posts a top-10 score for the day.

Round 2 Cut Prediction

The average score for the day came in slightly over par, at 71.83. But with only 65 players making the weekend (less than half the field), the cut line will hover around even and 1 over tomorrow. If the wind does pick up in the afternoon like expected, then the cut could trend towards 1 over late in the day.

Round 1 Stat Recap

Those who have been following my showdown stuff know I like to target golfers that are gaining strokes in all facets of their game, so that if one part goes south, they have others to fall back on. In Round 1, the following gained strokes in all four facets:

  1. Phil Mickelson
  2. Keegan Bradley
  3. Peter Malnati
  4. Tommy Fleetwood
  5. Luke List
  6. Gary Woodland
  7. Kyle Stanley
  8. Sungjae Im

The Wells Fargo Championship PGA DFS Picks

Anyone that looks at Windfinder will see that the 20 mph gusts and constant 15 mph will set in around 11 a.m. It will remain that way until later in the day before dying off again. Those teeing off at 1 p.m. will have it their entire round, while those teeing off later may get a bit of a break toward the back end of their rounds. However, the early-morning folks will have it best.

PGA DFS Picks for Round 2 of The Wells Fargo Championship

  • Bryson DeChambeau ($10,000): DeChambeau brought his big stick out to play in Round 1, but he completely botched two holes on the back nine — two of the easiest on the course. DeChambeau is down on the leaderboard, and with that maybe he’ll be lower-owned tomorrow. He tees off at 7:23 a.m. and will be a good starting place for lineups.
  • Joel Dahmen ($7,900): Getting the fire started late on Wednesday, Dahmen decided to poke some fun at Mickelson, his playing partner, and found out that wasn’t the greatest idea. But Dahmen has a chance to win back some money tomorrow he inevitably lost today. Dahmen’s irons were on absolute fire today, a continuance of good form he said he had last week at home.
  • Kyle Stanley ($7,100): The good form continued in Round 1 for Stanley, who has been simmering for the last month or so. His irons were the only thing missing last week, and they showed up in big fashion in Round 1. That should stick around a few more days.

Golfer I’m Playing That You Shouldn’t

  • Justin Suh ($6,800): Most know that Suh was a big play for the week-long slate. The first few holes started off terribly, and it looked like Suh had the chipping yips. He started3 over through three before settling down and playing his next 15 holes at 3 under, battling all the way back to even par. The highlight of the round was an absolute dart on the par-3 sixth, which measured 255 yards today, and Suh put it within four feet. Surprisingly, that was one of the few birdies of the day on that hole. Suh also finished the day with another 200-yard birdie on No.9, sticking a 202-yard iron shot within eight feet to cap off a solid comeback. While Suh is not at the basic min price he was at the start of the week, there’s still some value there, and he will head out at 9:02 a.m.
