Previous Round Recap

With Harris English going out first and part of the featured group coverage, all eyes were on him. He jumped out to 2 under through five and maintained a steady pace with a 65. That included a highlight reel shot on three where he hit a long iron from 216 to about three feet and made an eagle. Abraham Ancer and Cameron Smith shot 8 under and sit 2 back of English.

Sam Burns continues his strong play as well with a second straight score in the mid-60s, 3 back of English. Ian Poulter and Scottie Scheffler are in the same spot. Bryson DeChambeau’s lost weight and swing speed have seemed to do him well, as he put together his second straight good day on the course. He just needs to touch up his around the green work if he wants to win this week.

Notables

Will Zalatoris gets a nod here again, as his back problems seem all but resolved; he gained over three strokes tee to green today in Round 2. He is still not technically a PGA Tour member yet, so he will need to win to get into the playoffs this year. Louis Oosthuizen is having one ridiculously good putting year, already ranked No. 1 on tour and showing it this week, gaining 2.8 today and totaling 3.5 for the week. Dustin Johnson also sprung to form today, carrying over some late birdie putts from yesterday to a 5-under 65 today. He and Ryan Palmer played their way back into the tournament with solid scores. Justin Thomas is also lurking at -6 and looks decent with the putter.

WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational PGA DFS Picks

Only two golfers that have gained at least two strokes on the approaches through two rounds rank outside of the top 20 in the event: Rory McIlroy and Brooks Koepka. Both struggled with their short game, losing over 2.5 strokes. That should change over the weekend.

PGA DFS Picks for Round 2 of WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational

  • Rory McIlroy ($8,800): Koepka’s price is still quite inflated, coming in as the second-highest-priced golfer on the slate. Unless that triggers a fade and thus lower ownership, stick with McIlroy and the price discount. Their games have almost mirror images of each other in terms of where they are and are not performing, and they also played with each other the first two days.
  • Paul Casey ($7,800): Casey ‘s putting is carrying him this week, which is rare. He has gained over three strokes in two rounds but struggled just a bit everywhere else. That is very atypical of him in terms of ball striking and something worth betting on to turn around. In fact, he has only lost strokes ball striking three times in his last 15 starts, and the total strokes he has lost is 0.23.
  • Patrick Cantlay ($7,600): A dreadful Round 1 with the putter spoiled a good day off the tee. But a solid bounce back with his irons and putter in Round 2, and Cantlay was more like himself with four birdies and one bogey. The bogey was a three-putt from 17 feet as well. Looking through his shot tracker, things seem to be trending in the right direction. For a guy that was $9,200 to start the week, this seems like a steal after a good round.

Sneaky Pick for the Round 3 Showdown

  • Max Homa ($7,400): His ownership should be close to 10% if not over tomorrow, but Homa seems to be knocking on the door. He gained over 2.5 strokes with his irons in Round 1 and over a stroke around the green. In Round 2 he gained more than a half a stroke with his putter. Put them all together with a decent day off the tee, and he could make a giant leap up the leaderboard on moving day.
