Friday Weather
Friday weather looks perfect almost all day with little to no wind.
Round One CommentaryÂ
Jason Kokrak continued that great ball striking, and through together his best ARG round of the entire year. Justin Thomas on the other hand finally found a putting stroke gaining just shy of two strokes for the round. A five-pack sits just one back and a nine pack sits just two back. AKA this is a very tight field. Only two golfers finished over par. Crazy.
Heading into the week Rory McIlroy had been putting very well as of late, and the ball striking was falling a bit behind. That reversed course today, on both sides, losing 2.35 strokes putting and gaining 2.92 ball striking, a 5.27 stroke difference. Hideki Matsuyama, Ian Poulter, Vaughn Taylor, and Joel Dahmen round out the SG: BS vs. SG: P stat.
Round Two Showdown PicksÂ
Top-10 Pick
Joel Dahmen ($6,200)
I’m going a tad off the reservation for this one, but who can ignore 3.52 strokes gained ball striking from a guy that’s priced at 6200! Now it is only one round, but if that regresses even by a stroke or stroke and a half he’s got room to make that up with his putting where he barley gained anything at all. Plenty of big names to choose from if you don’t want to go against the grain here including Justin Thomas, Xander Schauffele, and Patrick Cantlay.Â
Stud or Value Pick outside of the Top 10
Brooks Koepeka ($10,200)Â
A late-round rally put Koepka back into the game after he struggled with his pitching and around the green shots today. An uncharacteristic loss of over two strokes in that category, something that I’m very much willing to bet will not happen again. He gained over 2.5 strokes ball striking and another stroke with the putter, so everything else looks to be pretty in shape heading into tomorrow’s second round.
Sneaky Pick Outside of top-10
Sung Kang ($6,100)
Kang burst out of the gates going four under thru his first five holes, but he was unable to pick it up after that finishing with a three-under 69. He did that by gaining just about a stroke tee to green with all of it and more coming from his ball striking while losing a combined .70 on his short game. If that changes a bit tomorrow and the irons stay lukewarm, he could be in for another sub 70 round at almost min price.
Lineup Fill-InsÂ
Rickie Fowler ($8,900)
Bryson DeChambeau ($7,900)
Rafa Cabrera-Bello ($7,000)
J.B. Holmes ($6,300)
