PGA DFS: Showdown Spotlight Round 4 of the 3M Open

This column is a quick-hitter article to give you the stats you need to make informed PGA DFS picks for your DraftKings + FanDuel daily fantasy lineups and give you a couple of recommendations for the 3M Open. On a typical showdown contest, DraftKings will offer upwards of $50,000 to first for rounds 2 and 3 showdown and sometimes up to $100,000 for the final-round contests. They also provide weekend-long contests that have been offering $25,000 to first for most weekends. Lastly, FanDuel has also tried to get into the weekend-long and final round contests, offering $10,000 and $5,000 to first.

Previous Round Commentary

A pushed back start had all the groups going off in a short window on moving day, and there were low scores all over the place. The greens were incredibly receptive, which always makes the approach game much easier. The wind picked up throughout the day, which did keep some players from going crazy low, especially the latest groups out.

Tony Finau wasn’t able to catch the leaders today, and couldn’t really get it going on the course either. He started slow but was able to finish the day at two-under, so not a bad fight, but he’ll need something better tomorrow to get his second PGA Tour Victory. For the third straight day, Michael Thompson & Richy Werenski are atop the leaderboard, maintaining their good play, at least enough to still be in the leader, both shooting a three under 68. It’s set the stage for an exciting day tomorrow as both these golfers are in store for what could be their most important day of professional golf in a long time.

The Expected Weather for Tomorrow’s Round

Rain could play a factor tomorrow, so we’ll see what the tour does with tee times. I’ll update them as soon as I get them—stronger winds in the morning.

Previous Round Stat Review

There were two 63s on the day, turning in by Adam Long, & Cameron Tringale, both moving up over thirty spots on the day, Tringale to 6th and Long to 13th. Max Homa, & Denny McCarthy turned in 64s, as did Emiliano Grillo, we’ll have to check in with Ben Rasa make sure he’s doing alright after that blistering Saturday from his guy.

BOB Leaders thru round 3:

  1. Richy Werenski & Dylan Frittelli (19)
  2. Harris English & Emiliano Grillo (18)
  3. Michael Tompson &  Max Homa (17)

Slate Strategy

Positional points added into the mix for the final round certainly give it another element of strategy.  Since the leaderboard is relatively compact, as anyone inside the top 50 is within five of the top 10, and with 63 out there today, I wouldn’t be surprised to see someone post something similar tomorrow and jolt up the leaderboard. Let’s take a look at a few of those candidates.

Top 10 Breakdown & PGA DFS Pick

Thirteen golfers sit within four of the lead held by Thompson & Werenski, including most of the names I’ve already listed. A few I haven’t yet are Ryan Moore, Alex Noren & Cameron Davis who like Finau, had a nice bounce-back round after stumbling out the gates. Nick Watney also finds himself with a chance for a big day tomorrow, a long journey from the first golfer to test positive for COVID. Noren had himself a day on the greens, gaining over four strokes while losing 1.34 tee to green, but he’s got himself a big chance tomorrow regardless of how he’s gotten it done.

Max Homa ($9,900)

With the focus that’s gone to Finau & Wolff, Homa’s price may same very expensive. I’m sure he’ll still be extremely popular coming off the 64 today and having been close the last few weeks. We’ve seen him really play well in contention the couple of times he’s been there, and with all parts of his game working, I think he’s got a chance to catch the leaders and post a number.

PGA DFS Stud or Value Pick Outside of Top 10 from the graphic above:

I like a couple of names on that list, with the ever-volatile Luke List being one of them. Tom Lewis also had it going at one point, getting it to nine under but faltered coming down the home stretch. Still, his tee to green game has looked sharp, and if he gets a hot putter on Sunday, he could be a really solid candidate for that “back door top 10”. Adam Schenk was also hot at one point this week, and maybe he’s due for resurrection after a bad Saturday.

Lineup Fill-Ins

Bernd Wiesberger ($7,400)

Robert Garrigus ($6,100)

Doug Ghim ($6,200)

Kramer Hickok ($6,400)
