Strokes Gained Analysis for the Sanderson Farms Championship

Every fantasy sport has its set of data that helps to project what’s going to happen. In professional golf, that’s done by a metric called Strokes Gained. Created by Mark Broadie, a professor at Columbia, it measures a golfer against others on a shot-by-shot basis. That’s compiled then for daily, weekly, and yearly stats, or however long your database goes for. The database we will be working with for PGA DFS covers about 18 months’ worth of tournaments. While making PGA DFS picks is typically about recent form, we like to learn players’ strengths and weaknesses to better understand where they might perform best. Let’s dig in.

Strokes Gained Analysis for the Sanderson Farms Championship

With 144 players in the field, we have plenty of data to analyze, and over 30 rounds of strokes gained data. Twenty-nine golfers haven’t had any starts in the database or only have one.

Strokes Gained Total

  • Data Set: With 37 starts in the database, the most of anyone in the field, Sungjae Im also leads with the highest number of times, gaining more than two strokes total seven times. Brian Harman and J.T. Poston have done it six times, while Scottie Scheffler and Doc Redman have five each. A couple more golfers shave five, including Rory Sabbatini, Dylan Frittelli, Cameron Tringale and Mark Hubbard.
  • Eight Weeks: Only nine golfers in the field have gained at least 1.75 strokes gained total at least twice in the last eight weeks, with Scheffler the only one doing it three times. Im, Redman and Hubbard have all done it twice, as have Sam Burns, Chez Reavie, Bud Cauley and Zach Johnson.
  • Graphic: Tringale has only three starts over the past 11 weeks but has done well in them, twice gaining over 1.5 and once losing. Cameron Davis has also been good, as have Harman and Adam Long.

Strokes Gained Tee to Green

  • Dataset: When we take putting out of the equation, Byeong Hun An and Sergio Garcia have gained at least 1.75 strokes six times, one shy of Scheffler’s seven. Im and Reavie have as well. Si Woo Kim, Sebastian Munoz and Emiliano Grillo have all done it five times.
  • Eight Weeks: Kim is close, but not close enough to Scheffler over the last eight weeks, as he’s gained 1.75 or more three times to Scheffler’s four. Redman, Reavie and J.J. Spaun have each done it twice.
  • Graphic: A bit of a surprise to see Russell Knox pop up on here, but a couple of good starts will do that. Jason Dufner and Hank Lebioda are a couple of other names that may surprise you as well.

Strokes Gained Off the Tee

  • Dataset: Nobody has been as consistent off the tee as Corey Conners, who has gained at last a half a stroke in 67% of his starts. Garcia has done it in 64%, while Jhonattan Vegas is the last golfer above 60%.
  • Ten Weeks: The same thing can be said about the last eight or so weeks, as Conners has gained at least a quarter of a stroke six times. Garcia and Scheffler have done it five times.
  • Graphic: The two worst putters in the game have assembled this week: Garcia and Grillo. Each of them has been good with their ball striking, including off the tee. A couple of other surprising names on here are Kyle Stanley and Martin Laird.

Strokes Gained on Approach

  • Dataset: Grillo is still the best at approaches in this field but not by as much as last week, with Redman and Reavie giving him a run for his money.
  • Eight Weeks: An and Scheffler are the hottest iron players in the field, or at least the most consistent, gaining at least a half a stroke four times each over the past nine weeks.
  • Graphic: I am not going to lie; this is where these types of graphics can be misleading, as Holmes only has one start over the past 11 weeks. Granted, in that start his irons looked good, but he still had to withdraw. Other names that have hit their irons well lately include Lebioda, Kim, Branden Grace, Patton Kizzire and Jimmy Walker.

Strokes Gained Around the Green

  • Dataset: Harman is back in the field and reigns supreme in this category. He’s gained at least a stroke six times in the dataset. Only two others have done that: Frittelli and Keegan Bradley. Four others have done it five times: Cauley, An, Ryan Armour and Fabian Gomez.
  • Eight Weeks: The names do not change much as Harman has been the most consistent, gaining at least a quarter of a stroke four times. Scheffler, Munoz and Hubbard have as well.

Strokes Gained Putting

  • Dataset: With Denny McCarthy in the field, this section will likely have his name on it for quite some time. He’s gained over 1.25 strokes putting in nine events, two more than the next batch of golfers. Those include Kizzire, Beau Hossler, Talor Gooch and Andrew Putnam.
  • Eight Weeks: With Mackenzie Hughes not in the field, it gives others a chance to shine this week with their flat stick. A couple of golfers that have been putting well lately are Harman, McCarthy, Redman, Long, Poston, Troy Merritt, Richy Werenski, Sepp Straka and Xinjun Zhang.
  • Graphic: Vincent Whaley will do his best to use his putting prowess this week, only having a couple of starts but averaging almost a stroke gained per round with the putter over them. Zach Johnson, Aaron Baddeley and Sahith Theegala are a couple of other candidates as well.
