PGA DFS Tournament Intro: The American Express

This Week’s Course(s): Torrey Pines North and South Course

Tournament Format: 144 players, 36-hole cut on Friday after the conclusion of play.

Courses and Tournament Commentary

Owned by the city of San Diego, Torrey Pines covers 1,700 acres of some of the most beautiful real estate in the world. There are two courses on this property, the North and South courses, and they have held a professional event for quite some time. The Farmers Insurance is its standard home, but every so often, it pulls in a major event, the next being the 2021 U.S. Open. The last major that was held here was the 2008 U.S. Open, the scene of the infamous Tiger Woods putt on 18 to tie Rocco Mediate, and then beat him the next day.

The North Course, played only during the opening two rounds, was one of the easiest on tour last year, while the South Course provides a tougher test, ranking in the top 20 in that regard. The South Course also has the signature holes along the pacific coast, which could even be in play to gobble up a couple of balls before the end of the week.

Not only is the course  long, but the rough can also be quite penal in places, similar to what we saw at Bethpage for the PGA Championship last year. Albeit not quite to major conditions, it will certainly behoove the players to be hitting out of the short stuff this week. Solid long iron players have always had a great track record here. Let’s dig into the stats.

PGA DFS Preview

It is a good structure for the $5 this week and still a six-figure payout. There is a bit of a bump for both the $44 and $444 as well. However, I think they will undercut it. Expect to see a secondary $5 in the $50-75,000 range with $10-15,000 up top. I’ll add FanDuel Monday night.

PGA DFS Commentary

38 of the top 100 players in the world, and half the world’s top 10, are here to compete. That’s a darn good field for a non-major.  Tiger Woods makes his 2020 calendar debut in a season where he can continue to rewrite the history books. Rory McIlroy also makes his debut alongside Woods, and they are joined by each of the last two winners of this event, Justin Rose and Jon Rahm, along with Xander Schauffele to round out the golfers inside the top 10 competing this week.

There is a solid contingent in the middle part of this field as well, including Rickie Fowler, Hideki Matsuyama, Sungjae Im and Jordan Spieth. Then there are the young studs flying up the OWGR that aren’t even on that list above, like Collin Morikawa and Scottie Scheffler. It’s the deepest field we’ve seen all year and will be until we get to The Players Championship in little over a month’s time.

PGA DFS Statistical Preview: Farmers Insurance Open

While the course is long, the rough is also quite penal on the South Course. A blend does best, so whoever drives it longest and straightest this week will likely win.

  • Driving Accuracy vs. Driving Distance: The course measuring a long 7,700 yards means you need all the distance you can muster up this week. Rahm, Rose and Day showcase that even more.
  • Strokes Gained Tee to Green Analysis: With big-time hitters like Rahm, Rose and Day as our previous three winners, it’s no secret off the tee is essential here. Rose and Rahm also gained over a stroke on average per round with their irons, whereas Day actually lost about three strokes with his irons en route to his victory in 2018.
  • Putting, How good do you need to be here?: Day shows how good putters can fare here, but none of the three gained more than five total strokes for the three rounds on the South Course.

Join Ben Rasa and me Wednesday night at 8:30 p.m. EST on the Awesemo YouTube channel for some more great info on this week’s tournament!

Cheers!
