PGA DFS Showdown Picks: The Tour Championship

Previous Round Recap

The Tour Championship would give us fireworks early, as Billy Horschel would knock in a thirty-plus footer in on the very first group! Then, Sergio Garcia, in the very next group, would hole out for eagle! It would set the tone for a fun day at East Lake that even included a huge hole-in-one from Harris English. Not just anyone hole in one either, but on the 15th hole, a long island green par 3, that saw Jordan Spieth and Cameron Smith make double. Spieth and Brooks Koepka would both be three-under on their round and inside the top 10 before putting it in the water. Koepka would save bogey, however, and birdie 17 to get it back to -5.

It also featured incredible recovery shots from Rory McIlroy and Viktor Hovland. The latter’s going in for eagle, one of the best shots you’ll see all season. Not a half-hour later, McIlroy almost pulled off the exact same thing, but the ball would stop 1 foot short of going in for a two.

Notables

Patrick Cantlay would continue his fine play and put a 67 on the board, making everyone go real low to try and catch him. Only Jon Rahm was able to beat Cantlay by two on the day of golfers that were within 6 shots. Kevin Na and Billy Horschel were the surprise names of the day, both getting out to a great start, with Horschel tieing the round low with 65 and Na moving into the top 10 with a 66. Only five scores would best Cantlay’s 67, Na, Horschel. Rahm, English, and Hovland all had 66 or better. Hideki Matsuyama had the outlying round in round one, but on the bad side, shooting a 77 on day one, after starting his day seven over thru 1o holes.

Round 1 Stat Recap

A full day of play and a full set of statistics. If round one is any indication of what’s to come, both Rahm & Thomas looked superb both on the greens and with their ball striking.

The Tour Championship Round 2 DraftKings Slate Preview

  • Lock Time: 11:40 a.m. ET
  • Grand Prize: DraftKings offers $50,000 to first place and $150,000 guaranteed for the second-round slate.

PGA DFS DraftKings Showdown Picks

Harris English’s hole in one changed the landscape of the tournament, at least on the DFS side, as having him in lineups will prove to be a necessity as we advance. Add in the fact that he’s priced down considerably for round two, and there will be a massive ownership spike on the slate. Fading hasn’t work much. Lately, I’d know. Scottie Scheffler, who also had a great day with his short game in round one, will also be a popular pick in round two.

  • Justin Thomas ($9,500) A really rocky start for Thomas, as he couldn’t kick it into gear in the early part of his round. He started with four quality looks for birdie, nothing inside of ten feet, but nothing outside of 25 either, and woudln’t make any of them. That lead to a bogey after a poor drive, poor recover shot, and poor chip shot. He’d bounce right back with an easy birdie on the par 5 the, but another careless bogey on 8 had Thomas going the wrong way. Then, things got going with four birdies and no bogey’s on the back. Thomas got himself back into the tournament. I’ll buy into that momentum heading into the second round, especially with his putter gaining a stroke in round one.
  • Jordan Spieth ($8,400)  It’s either he or McIlroy tomorrow in the mid 8,000 to fill in the third golfer in the lineup. It’s not a bad head-to-head, and I assume most will click Rory over Jordan. His six birdie round was spoiled by a terrible swing on 15, which cost him two strokes. He lost almost three on the day with his approaches, something I’m absolutely willing to bet changes tomorrow. He also looks solid off the tee gaining almost a stroke in round one. That should lead to a few quality looks tomorrow.
  • Brooks Koepka ($7,600)  Most might shy away from someone who gained almost three strokes putting in a round while losing strokes tee to green, but it typically signals good things to come with Brooks. While the putter isn’t likely to stay as hot, there is a tone of room for improvement in the other categories, especially with his irons. If he can clean that up in round two and stay hot on the green, he’ll be part of the optimal lineup given his salary.

Sneaky DraftKings Pick for the Tour Championship Round 2 Showdown

  • Corey Conners ($6,600) Kevin Na is also a great pick down at these price levels, but given that he’s in the top 10, it likely disqualifies him as a sneaky pick. Conners, however, silently had himself a decent day. He gained over three strokes with his ball-striking but, as expected, struggled with his putter and around the green. So, the bet is that those level off for a round, and that round is Friday, while the ball striking remains hot. If that happens, 65 isn’t out of the question.
