PGA DFS Showdown Picks: Wyndham Championship Round 3

Previous Round Recap

Morning Wave

Webb Simpson would continue his hot form from the day prior and set the day’s tone. Silver Medalist Rory Sabbatini needed a big week here to get into the playoffs next week, gave himself a great chance at it with his six-under 64 Friday Morning. Justin Rose is in an almost identical spot to Sabbatini and is also in position for it with a 65 on Friday. Russell Knox would shoot the round of the day from this wave. After his opening round 74, he backed that up with a second-round 63 and made the cut on the number. Mackenzie Hughes had a similar move, but after an opening-round 70, Hughes matched Knox at the 63 number and sits at seven-under heading into the weekend.

Notables

Alex Smalley would take full advantage of his sponsor invite here this week, needing to make the cut to get status for the Korn Ferry Tour Finals. He did just that, and maybe more, with a 64 on Friday, putting him inside the top 10 heading into the weekend. However, other big names from this wave struggled and missed the cut, including Hideki Matsuyama, Brian Harman, Patton Kizzire, J.T. Poston, and plenty more.

PM Wave

The afternoon wave kicked off, and with Russell Henley bogeying one of his first few holes, plenty thought this could turn into the Webb Simpson show again. But, Henley caught fire in the middle of the round, shot his second mid 60’s score, and leads by four heading into the weekend. Tyler Duncan found form just when he needed to, shooting 62 on Friday and extending his season for at least two more rounds. Roger Sloan would follow in Duncan and Knox’s footsteps. After a lousy round one, he saved his season with a Friday 64.

Notables

Kevin Na is among the more prominent names still left in the tournament, and he had a solid Friday, shooting a six-under 64. That included at least one miss inside of 7 feet, which is not typical for Na. Sam Ryder also found a way to extend his season but will need another two good rounds to ensure he plays next week. Looking for any bright spots he can get, and maybe a top 10, John Augenstein has made the weekend for the second straight start, but with only one made cut, a tie for 20th at the Charles Schwab, he’ll need something inside the top 15 to gain access to the Korn Ferry Tour Finals.

Wyndham Championship Round 3 PGA DFS Picks

Sedgefield doesn’t have much protection on it, other than the above-average green size, and is complex and thus relinquishes plenty of low scores. With not much length to it either, golfers that gain most of their strokes off the tee struggled to get inside the top 10, and some, like Matthew Wolff, struggled even to make the cut.

  • Bubba Watson ($8,000) Betting on a golfer that can’t putt is always a gamble, especially at an event where you need to be a good putter to win. But, for showdown, all you need is a good stretch of golf with a hot putter, and it can pay huge dividends. Identifying the cheaper stud value has really been working in these showdown slates, and I think Bubba and the next guy fit that bill for tomorrow’s slate.
  • Bobby MacIntyre ($8,000) After earning special Temporary Membership and getting a start via that exemption this week, Bobby will need a massive weekend to earn himself full-time playing privileges for next year on the PGA Tour. We’ve seen him go crazy over the weekend recently at one of the biggest tournaments of the year, the Open Championship. He also moved up drastically over the weekend last week, clearly playing different, more aggressive golf over the final two rounds.
  • Matt Kuchar ($7,200) One of three big names that have moved into position to make the playoffs after starting the week on the bubble or even outside it. Kuchar, known for his putting prowess over the last few years, has got his game rounding into shape tee thru green, gaining over 5.5 strokes in the first two rounds. But he’s struggled with the putter a bit. That’s absolutely bound to change, and hopefully, it will come in round 3.

Sneaky Pick for the Wyndham Championship Round 3 Showdown

  • John Augenstein ($6,300) As I mentioned earlier, Augenstein plays the weekend for his second straight start. After missing the cut in his first seven professional starts, Augenstein has clearly found something. He’s got a lot to play for this weekend, as anything inside the top 15 would earn him enough points to qualify for the Korn Ferry Tour Finals. After an abysmal start to his career, this could be a perfect way to resurrect it. A top 15 this week and a good week in one of the next four, and he’ll have his PGA Tour card after seven straight missed cuts to start his career.  His approaches seem to be clicking the best through two rounds, as he’s gained just shy of three strokes in two rounds.
