PGA DFS: Against the Grain Picks for the Safeway Open (FREE)

Whether it’s your first time reading, or you’re a seasoned vet, this article covers GPP PGA DFS picks for fantasy golf. It also breaks the field down into four price categories for FanDuel, DraftKings, and Yahoo PGA DFS. The article is meant to be a guiding tool in creating variance in your lineups, that in turn hopefully, can create an edge against the field. Winning a GPP of any size is a difficult task, especially ones with 40k-plus entries. Each of my big wins has come by going “Against the Grain” with some players and pairing them with the right chalk. Now, these picks are meant only for Game Theory plays, and may not ultimately in my player pool. On to the Greenbrier!

A quick recap of last week

RSQ came in just shy of 87%, not bad for the fall swing.

Commentary

A balanced projection for the top-five guys on the board this week with none of them getting below 10%. However, I have seen some discrepancies between the capping sites as to Cantlay’s projected ownership, but not so much the others, with some having him as high as 20% owned, while others are closer to 10%.

If that’s the case, it’s pretty clear that he and Scott will be the lower owned of the five, as gamers chase the Sungjae Im win.

Top ATG play

A lot of this will depend on where Cantlay comes in, but at 11.2K if you decide to go this route, you best hope for a top 5. If not, it could be an easy way to play yourself out of the contest. However, I am known to take risks.

Fantasy Golf Commentary

One of the reasons I like to jump on guys “early” is simply for the fact that you don’t know if it’s too early or not. Take Collin Morikawa, for example, he came out on the RBC Canadian Open, no one had a clue who he was, or not many, and he came in at less than 1% owned. My 15% that week aided me in having a solid week that week, but in retrospect, it should have been more. Fast forward three months, and he’s 9.4K in a good field and likely to be the highest-owned golfer of the slate. No surprise to see Bryson Dechambeau & Byeong Hun An next on the list, coming in above 15% as well.

The next batch of golfers will be interesting to see how they shake out, with Lucas Glover & Corey Conners bother missing the cut last week, very close to the number. Emiliano Grillo, Chez Reavie, Kevin Streelman, Brandt Snedker & Scott Piercy will all get somewhere between 10-15% this week, for instance. That leaves just about ten golfers that will be owned under 10% and likely three golfers (Mickelson, Na, Leishman) that will be owned under 5%. Here’s the list of golfers I like under 10% this week

  • Abraham Ancer
  • Charles Howell III
  • Francesco Molinari

Top ATG Play

Starting a line with one of the three from the bullet points above should be good. If you want to add in a bit more variance, take it from the patch of four golfers that are bolded last in the commentary section.

$7,000 range

A week after being one of the top-5 highest-owned golfers at a price way above his this week, Vaughn Taylor looks like he could garner some interest again as well. He missed the cut in brave fashion too, making double on 18, needing five or better to make the cut. That will undoubtedly test some gamers patience with him this week. Harris English & Dylan Frittelli come in hot off of good finishes last week and will see plenty of attention this week, likely owned close to 15%. Cameron Tringale & Robby Shelton will probably join the three golfers already mentioned in being owned above 10%, with Kevin Chappell getting close. Then it will spread out quite a bit, with the following golfers getting somewhere between 7-10%:

  • Wyndham Clark
  • Kyle Stanley
  • Jim Furyk
  • Bud Cauley
  • Harold Varner III

Leaving plenty of golfers that will be owned less than 5%, including:

  • Si Woo Kim
  • Kevin Tway
  • C.T. Pan
  • Jhonattan Vegas
  • Brendan Steele

Top ATG PGA DFS Picks

Pick at least one each from the lists above and you can likely pair them with anyone else and not be duplicated, which leads me to my two picks. I’d lean HV3 and Si Woo right now.

$6,000 range

Sepp Staka off of back to back missed cuts likely doesn’t see as much ownership as what he’s projected to be. Roger Sloan, however, will likely be a target for a lot of gamers that go down here this week to field out there teams and will be the only golfer near the 10% mark. Max Homa & Sam Ryder might see a bit of ownership as well.
