RBC Canadian Open 2022 One and Done Picks

The PGA Tour is just one week away from the third major of the season, as the U.S. Open is rapidly approaching. In the meantime, the tour packs its bags and heads north of the border for the RBC Canadian Open 2022. This event still draws a quality field despite being right before a major, so for One and Done there are tough decisions to make.

PGA One and Done Picks: RBC Canadian Open 2022

The Memorial 2022 One and Done Recap

Jon Rahm

Jon Rahm got a 10th-place finish and $303,000 added to the bank for One and Done last week. It’s another data point showing Rahm’s floor and ability to grind out results, but it’s also another disappointing effort. Rahm hasn’t had a fantastic 2022 season, and unless he wins the U.S. Open or British Open this year, it will be a down season for a guy this good. If still available, he will remain a quality target every week, and a few more wins can quickly change the narrative around his season.

Patrick Reed

The only good thing Patrick Reed did last week was find a way to make the cut and at least return a paycheck. The 53rd-place finish isn’t going to make much of a dent on the yearly total, but it’s still better than a missed cut in a tournament without a full field. Reed had been trending upward after a quality result at Charles Schwab, but there is still more to sort out in his game before the U.S. Open tees off. If his ball striking can stay consistent, Reed’s around the green and putter will be there, and that’s the question for the second half of the season.

Collin Morikawa

A few world-class players didn’t find the weekend last week, and Collin Morikawa was among them. He still was positive with the ball striking, as he always is, but losing four strokes around the green was the killer, especially Friday. That will continue to plague what could be the best ball striker in the world, as some of these courses don’t allow golfers to hit the majority of greens. Morikawa has been at his best at times, which is major-winning upside, but week to week his short game is the big question mark.

Matthew Fitzpatrick

A lot of people have already used Matthew Fitzpatrick this year in One and Done, and most likely he provided a quality payout. Last week was the exception, as Fitzpatrick missed the cut, but over the two days he gained 6.5 strokes tee to green, which is in line with his top-10 finishes over the past few weeks. The difference was he lost a career-worst 7.5 strokes putting in two days, which is unheard of. That can be useful for One and Done, as it is likely an outlier with no impact long term. Buying low on Fitzpatrick makes sense here, as his game is in much better shape than last week would indicate.

Harold Varner III

If there are not a ton of elite players left for the season then, taking a mid-range target like Harold Varner makes sense. It was just two weeks ago that Varner found himself among the leaders until he went triple-double-triple to derail his Sunday. The upside is there, and his attacking of some of these tree-lined courses in the past has turned out well. Another RBC event at Harbour Town provided Varner’s two best finishes on tour with a second and third in recent years. He sits around 35-1 in the outright market, so he is clearly live to get in the mix this week.

Corey Conners

Corey Conners should be a popular choice this week as he tries to win the Canadian Open for his home country. Conners is a premier ball striker who seems to have gotten back on track after a few average-at-best showings. Last week at Memorial, he gained eight strokes on the approach, which equated to just a 13th-place finish due to subpar short game. That iron performance broke a stretch of two events where Conners actually lost on the approach, which is clearly the strength of his game. Playing in Canada with his irons back in form seems like a spot to consider him in One and Done.

RBC Canadian Open 2022 One and Done Pick: Corey Conners

Many of the other options are unavailable this late in the season, so the hometown player is the pick. A lot of One and Done comes down to who is available and who to save for the remaining bigger tournaments of the PGA calendar. Conners has shown his ball striking is still there, and the talent has never been an issue. A win on tour and a top-five at the RBC Heritage show Conners has a chance anytime he tees it up. The big question will be, can he limit the scrambling opportunities and take advantage of his ball striking? If he puts together another showing like last week at Muirfield Village, he should be in line for a nice One and Done payout.
