PGA One and Done: Expert PGA Picks This Week for the 2022 Waste Management Phoenix Open

The PGA Tour is off to the desert for one of the more exciting venues on the PGA Tour. The 2022 Waste Management Phoenix Open is set to begin, and with it comes a rowdy atmosphere that makes this course unique. It is a staple of the early PGA Tour season, which means a quality field and plenty of PGA One and Done options for golf picks this week. It is still early in the season, so finding players should not be an issue.

PGA One and Done Golf Picks: 2022 WM Phoenix Open

What is a One and Done pool?

A One and Done pool has some similarities with NFL survivor pools except that players cannot be eliminated early for making a poor pick. Each week players have to select one golfer, and their prize money earned that week become points for the player. The same player cannot be used twice, just like an NFL survivor contest, so strategy and knowing when to save a top-tier player can make the difference. At the end of the season, the team with the most cumulative earning earns a strong payoff. Pools will pay several spots, depending on it is size, similar to a GPP structure from DFS golf.

Tom Hoge

Another first-time winner, Tom Hoge outdueled multiple high-end players to earn his victory. Hoge had been playing quality golf, and in the DFS world it was reasonable to get to him at a mid-range price tag. For One and Done it would have been an extremely aggressive selection, so most pools did not have many people cashing the seven-figure payday with Hoge.

Jordan Spieth

One of the top players trying to chase down Hoge was Jordan Spieth, who once again showed up at AT&T Pebble Beach. He loves that course, and despite flirting with a cliff, he survived and banked $948,000 for his second-place finish. It was a quality output for Spieth backers, and due to his course history and abilities he was a popular selection last week.

Jason Day

Jason Day is another player who loves playing at Pebble Beach, who was this columns’ selection in One and Done last week. Day was flirting with the top of the leaderboard before a rough Sunday landed him outside the top 20. The result was a tie for 24th and only $74,000 added to the bank. It was a disappointing effort — even if it was not a missed cut — considering Day entered Sunday with a chance to get in the mix.

Waste Management Phoenix Open One and Done Picks This Week

Jon Rahm

There are no bad events for using Jon Rahm, so it is just a matter of saving him or using him early. He is the betting favorite in every event he enters, and the form backs that up. He has finished third at the Farmers Insurance Open, 14th at the American Express and second at Sentry to start his PGA Tour season, and coming to an event he loves the results should not change much. Rahm was an Arizona State guy, and his game translates to TPC Scottsdale just like it does everywhere else currently. He plays this event every year, and his worst finish over the last five events here was a tie for 16th, so clearly the floor is incredibly stable. Burning him is a risk, but playing him is understandable given the form and situation.

Xander Schauffele

Schauffele was runner-up here last year, and that is one of the many near wins he has had over this so-called winning drought. A player this good is going to get back in the winner’s circle, but with each near-win the pressure mounts. Schauffele is always a quality target for One and Done, as he is a reliable cut maker who finds himself all over the first page of the leaderboard. TPC Scottsdale demands an all-around game, and he has that with his ball striking and putter. With a deep, talented field, there will not be any extreme ownership for One and Done Pools, which makes Schauffele a rock-solid target this week.

Scottie Scheffler

Scottie Scheffler is a little down the board, but premium golfers are the targets this week. Scheffler is still a world-class player who has most of what matters heading into Waste Management. He finished seventh here in 2021 and is coming off a respectable 20th-place finish at the Farmers Insurance Open. The result was not fantastic, but he gained 5.7 strokes with the irons, and that type of ball striking will lead to strong finishes soon. Scheffler has not missed a cut since October 2021 at the Shriners, and it is hard to imagine he will not at least cash a check this week.

2022 Phoenix Open One and Done Pick: Scottie Scheffler

All three options above are popular choices, but Scheffler’s ball-striking numbers dating back to swing season are fantastic. Plus, he has played this course a few times in recent years, which is never a bad thing. Scheffler has been positive tee to green in 18 of his last 20 measured events, and it is hard to imagine he will not do that here. If the putter gets going, he should be able to build upon the seventh-place finish from 2021.
