The tour heads to Muirfield Village this week with the Memorial Tournament set to begin. This is another staple of the PGA Tour season, and it usually draws a stronger field. It is an invitational, so there are fewer golfers to choose from, but it is easier to get players through the weekend. That will factor more in PGA DFS golf lineups, but for PGA One and Done picks, the goal is to rack up as much money as possible. Last week saw Jordan Spieth once again get into contention at Colonial but ultimately fall short, with Jason Kokrak taking down the win.
What is a One and Done pool?
A One and Done pool has some similarities with NFL survivor pools except that you cannot be eliminated early for making a poor pick. Each week you have to select one golfer, and their prize money earned that week become your points. You cannot use the same player twice, just like an NFL survivor contest, so strategy and knowing when to save a top-tier player can make the difference. At the end of the season, the team with the most cumulative earning is in line for a big payoff. Your pool will pay several spots, depending on its size, similar to a GPP structure that we all know from PGA DFS.
Charles Schwab Challenge Recap
Tony Finau
Most people already used Tony Finau this year, so it was an against-the-grain play to use him last week. Finau at times has looked on the verge of adding the elusive second win to his resume, and at other moments he looks to be in shaky form overall. Last week had a little of both, and the end result was a $68,000 payday after finishing 20th. That is not a terrible result, but with all the cash at the top of these leaderboards, it was an underwhelming result for one of the best players in the field.

Gary Woodland
This was not a popular pick, but Woodland was most likely still available. His game had been trending upward, and despite a course that wasn’t a perfect fit, Woodland was able to finish 14th for $125,000. He gained four strokes tee to green, which made it three straight tournaments with at least four strokes tee to green for Woodland. If this form continues, he is someone to consider in the coming weeks with a lot of quality events on the schedule.
Emiliano Grillo
Grillo was a major factor in DFS lineups and One and Done. The result wasn’t perfect, but an eighth-place finish for a mid-range target was a success. He took home $196,00, and there are still big names available. Grillo’s ball striking has always been a strength, and now that he has found a little form with the putter, he is primed to continue his good play. He will likely be on the outside of One and Done conversations in most weeks, but for DFS he still is someone to take notice of.
The Memorial Tournament One and Done Picks
Viktor Hovland
Hovland has a ton of talent, and consistency is starting to come with it. He has missed just a single cut in 2021 and has finished third in two out of his last three starts. His ball striking carries his game, and getting around Muirfield Village is going to require all the shot-making skills. Hovland should be able to lean on his elite tee-to-green game, and having gained two strokes putting in three straight events, everything is coming together at the right time. One other positive for Hovland is Awesemo’s Unofficial World Golf Rankings tool has him as a long-term value at No. 6 in the world, so making sure he’s deployed at some point is strongly recommended.
Rickie Fowler
This could be a gigantic trap play, but one has to at least consider Rickie Fowler in this spot. He is most likely still available, and recently he has shown the slightest uptick with form. Plus, the eighth-place finish at the PGA Championship showed the ceiling is still there.
The big question with Fowler is, was the 4.4 strokes gained putting at Kiawah Island just an outlier or did he truly find the key weapon in his game? If he once again is hot with the flat stick, there is no reason he cannot compete. But tread carefully, as this one carries missed-cut risk, even in an invitational field.
Emiliano Grillo
Get used to seeing Grillo in this article, as he is going to be the preferred punt One and Done play for people who haven’t used him. Last week he gained 3.6 strokes on the greens and now has been positive in four of his last five events. A few months ago that was unthinkable, and pairing that with a top-end iron game is the recipe for success. Grillo has plenty of experience at Memorial, and if he can just survive off the tee, there is no reason he cannot once again grab a sizeable payday while keeping key golfers for later dates.
Memorial Tournament One and Done Pick: Viktor Hovland
Hovland’s ball-striking numbers have been consistently fantastic. He is more built for destroying an easier course than grinding his way around a tough venue, but that gap is shrinking. His around-the-green game is still the weak link, but Hovland has made strides and that is key at a course like Muirfield Village. His off-tee numbers are going to be strong, and the rest of his game is in solid enough shape to contend.
