PGA One and Done Picks: Top Golfers for The US Open | Jon Rahm

The toughest test in golf is here with the US Open set to tee off. This is the third major on the calendar, one that always brings interest given the conditions the USGA usually sets. There have been over-par winners and players brought to their knees with the courses prepared to the max difficulty. This year, the tour returns to the site of the Farmers Insurance Open, Torrey Pines. Do not expect a Farmers-like test, however, as the rough will be up and the difficulty level increased. We’ll be breaking down all of the top US Open PGA One and Done picks for the week below. For an in-depth look at this Torrey Pines course, make sure to check out all the DFS golf picks and golf betting content available this week.

With this being a major, all the biggest names are in the field. That said, the U.S. Open also provides opportunities for a ton of lesser-known players. Because of the qualification process, there are a lot of guys who are looking for a miracle few days. For One and Done, there is a gigantic purse up for grabs.

Last week Garrick Higgo took down The Palmetto Championship after very few starts on the PGA Tour. His is a name to get used to seeing, as he has the talent to compete. The $1.3 million payday was mostly likely missed by everyone, and given the names at the top of the board, it is safe to say last week didn’t do much for anyone.

What is a One and Done pool?

A One and Done pool has some similarities with NFL survivor pools except that you cannot be eliminated early for making a poor pick. Each week you have to select one golfer, and their prize money earned that week become your points. You cannot use the same player twice, just like an NFL survivor contest, so strategy and knowing when to save a top-tier player can make the difference. At the end of the season, the team with the most cumulative earning is in line for a big payoff. Your pool will pay several spots, depending on its size, similar to a GPP structure that we all know from PGA DFS.

Dustin Johnson

There was a brief moment when Dustin Johnson looked to be primed to take over the Palmetto. He ultimately didn’t have enough, and a triple bogey late on Sunday cost him some cash. Johnson finished 10th, resulting in a pedestrian $177,000 payday. Although no one would lose ground from banking that money, rostering Johnson should produce a better result.

Lucas Glover

One of the players with some buzz heading into The Palmetto, Glover had seen Congaree a lot. When it’s a new venue, having players with knowledge is something that people gravitate towards and can be an effective strategy. Glover showed why that strategy isn’t foolproof, as he couldn’t get anything going and didn’t even make the weekend. Against a field that bad, it’s a disappointment.

Tyrrell Hatton

Hatton ended up being a reasonably popular pick last week. He was one of the stronger players in the field and available for most people in their leagues. The return was a great week that included an insane three-eagle round to propel him to second place. The $411,000 was a strong payout.

US Open PGA One and Done Picks

Jon Rahm

Rahm may not be left, but if he is, the list starts with him. This is an even better pick for those at the top of their standings, as Rahm will be popular playing him can serve as defense to an extent. Rahm is coming off a truly unprecedented week where he was flirting with all kinds of records at Memorial before having to withdraw after Saturday’s round due to COVID. As awful as that was, his form was excellent. This course will need the full skillset, and Rahm’s well-rounded game suits him here. He is the tournament favorite in the betting market at 10-1 and the safest option on the board.

Xander Schauffele

Another player who figures to be popular, Schauffele is the hometown guy looking for the major breakthrough. He has been close many times already in his brief career, and the U.S. Open seems to fit his game. So far Schauffele has played in four U.S. Opens, and his worst finish is sixth. That is an unbelievable statistic, and to see him every year be in contention regardless of setup is incredibly impressive.

Schauffele has plenty of experience at Torrey Pines and finally showed some form at this course, with a runner-up finish back in January. For some added value, Awesemo’s Unofficial World Golf Rankings tool to ranks Schauffele as the second-best player in the world behind only Rahm. Going to him here makes a lot of sense, and he and Rahm figure to be among the most popular top-end choices.

Shane Lowry

If no big names available, then players need to look down the list for some lesser-known golfers. It is a delicate balance since realistically the top end of the US Open is usually filled with superstars, thus it is usually inadvisable to go for someone with little to no experience. Lowry is a perfect target since he isn’t a top tier player but can hold his own anytime he tees it up. He is notoriously good at difficult setups and comes in playing quality golf.

Lowry hasn’t missed a cut since March, and his ball-striking numbers are trending upward. He finished fourth at the PGA and followed that up with a sixth at Memorial, both of which are fields comparable to what he will see here. More importantly he gained 11 strokes tee to green at the PGA Championship and 7.7 at the Memorial, which is the key to success at a US Open.

If he continues to put the ball in play off the tee, Lowry is built to grind out quality rounds at a course that could produce its fair share of carnage. Awesemo’s premium projections have him as the eighth-best value in the entire field, and that value can translate outside of DFS.

The US Open One and Done Pick: Shane Lowry

All three of the guys recommended make sense in One and Done for different reasons. Rahm and Schauffele are safer because they check the most boxes, but availability could be an issue. Then there is Lowry, who is playing every bit as well as the best players on tour but long term doesn’t have the consistency. Right now Lowry’s game is fully in form, and Torrey Pines is another course that should suit the conditions most associated with Lowry. He has experience at Farmers as well, which is never bad, how players did at that event is not all that relevant. Fire up Lowry as a guy who isn’t on the top of everyone’s list but still provides upside in one of the biggest events of the season.
